David Willey is the new batsman, England have batting depth as their number nine normally opens the batting for Northants in one-day cricket. He (and the rest of the England XI) didn't get the chance to bat on his debut in Ireland, but he's off the mark with a single. A better over for Henry, just two runs and a wicket from it.

"It was a bit of an anti-climax. It was catching practice for the man at backward point. Seven wickets down now. David Willey can give it a whack but they need Stokes to stay there and bat through the overs."

The new batsman is Adil Rashid but some hesitancy nearly sees Stokes run out. Stokes, rather overshadowed by the Billings cameo, adds a single to move to 67 from 43 balls.

"Billings was really causing some problems. It is an excellent cameo, batting so well with Stokes to push England on. They are now in a great position to get to that 350 mark."

This has been an international baptism of fire for Ben Wheeler - but he has another wicket as Billings aims another big blast, gets a top edge into the sky and is caught for a tremendous 34 from 16 balls.

"It has been sensational stuff from Sam Billings, who is having some fun out there. He is freeing his arms and playing with the bowlers. This is the beauty of the brand of cricket England are playing. He can come into the game and play without fear of failure."

  9. Eng 283-5 (Stokes 61*, Billings 34*)published at 13:35 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

A bit wild from Henry, he starts with a wide and Billings is really moving up through the gears, pulling Henry for four and while attempting a slog-sweep, top-edging a four over the keeper's head. That's five fours from the last five balls Billings has faced, have England unearthed another star here? While New Zealand get their breath back with a rare dot ball, Billings smacks another four over the bowler's head - six fours from seven balls for the Kent man, he has 34 from 14 balls and he's even overshadowing Stokes. Tremendous entertainment for the Hampshire crowd.

"This is how Billings plays for Kent. But it is very different to do it at international level, right from the word go. We are getting near the full repertoire here. It is all good stuff."

Every run is crucial here, Billings scoops McClenaghan over extra cover and they scamper three. The Kent man then finds the boundary for the first time by stepping across and ramp-scooping a four through fine leg for four, before pulling another wide of mid-wicket. Another ramp brings him four more - the youngster has 22 from 10 balls, and England's powerplay total was 58-1 - not bad compared to the panic stations which used to permeate their batting powerplays.

Tattz in Oldbury: I know he didn't kick on today, but for me Buttler is the outstanding candidate to replace Cook in tests and maybe Morgan one day as captain in all formats. Superb temperament and approach to the game.

McCullum rotates his seamers, with the two left-armers going from the Pavilion End and Matt Henry replacing fellow right-armer Southee at the Northern End (where the hotel is - and, for those with local knowledge, the village of Hedge End). The tall Henry is charged with an aerial wide when he bangs in a bouncer, Stokes and Billings busily add some well-run singles, while Billings goes unorthodox, chipping the ball from outside off stump towards cow corner for three. 250 up for England - and in these modern times, they must be thinking of at least 350.

Haven't seen the Wasp for a while, it may have been swatted by Stokes who has swatted just about everything else today.

Determined not to let the Kiwis see his discomfort, Stokes wallops McClenaghan over mid-wicket for an enormous six, that's cleared the seating area of the bowl and away towards the food vans! What a way to bring up your fifty - it only took him 31 balls.

"England have played wonderful stuff with the bat. But the ones who have done the damage are not the new players. Suddenly, the likes of Morgan, Buttler and Root are the senior men and they are enjoying the responsibility."

  20. Eng 233-5published at 13:15 British Summer Time 14 June 2015

McClenaghan replaces fellow left-arm seamer Wheeler (where do the Kiwis find these left-arm seamers from? Have England looked there?), Stokes forges ahead with another four back past the bowler - but next ball, he's literally floored as a full toss hits him just to one side of the unmentionables (ie just wide of where his box would be). Ouch indeed.
