    Target 301

That was a key wicket just as Notts were looking like they were starting to motor. Four singles off the rest of Zafar Ansari's over as overseas player Dan Christian, who was brought in for Imran Tahir, comes to the crease.

  2. wicket

WICKET Patel (c Davies b Ansari 51)published at 25.1 overs

    Notts 107-4 (Smith 45)

Is that game over for Notts? After all Samit Patel's hard work to reach his half-century he tries to pull Zafar Ansari away but miscues his shot and sends the ball straight to Steve Davies at long-on.

  3. 50 runs

    Samit Patel hits 50 (69 balls, 5 fours)published at 25 overs

    Notts 107-3 (Smith 45, Patel 51)

Samit Patel brings up his half-century with a sweetly timed cover drive off Batty.

Greg Smith doesn't want to get left behind and sends Gareth Batty's fifth ball for a boundary.

  4. Notts 97-3 (Smith 40, Patel 46)published at 24 overs

    Target 301

Samit Patel is looking good for a half-century here as he and Greg Smith edge Notts towards 100.

A really good partnership so far which has given the visitors a slight chance.

  5. Notts 94-3 (Smith 38, Patel 45)published at 23 overs

    Target 301

After the excitement of the last two overs, Gareth Batty restores some order with just four runs coming from it.

The run rate continues to creep up towards eight an over.

  6. Notts 90-3 (Smith 37, Patel 42)published at 22 overs

    Target 301

The ball is definitely turning out there as Zafar Ansari beats Samit Patel and Gary Wilson whips the bails off.

There is a brief question of the stumping but the Notts all-rounder had grounded his back foot.

"You tend not to want to let the asking rate get above eight an over. But the key is for Notts not to panic. There's a lot of space out there. They've got to keep pushing hard and try to turn those ones into twos and twos into threes."

  8. dropped catch

    Dropped catchpublished at 21 overs

    Notts 88-3 (Smith 36, Patel 41)

Greg Smith launches the ball high up into the air and Kumar Sangakkara runs round and catches the ball but as he heads towards the boundary rope he throws the ball away in an attempt to stop Surrey picking up four runs.

However the Sri Lankan touched the rope with the ball in his hands. After much thought and lengthy discussion the third umpire eventually gives it as a six.

You'd have to say that was very harsh against the Sri Lankan.

  9. Notts 79-3 (Smith 28, Patel 40)published at 20 overs

Spin from both ends for Surrey and the Notts batsman are taking singles but still not managing to find the boundary ropes. Just three more singles added off Zafar Ansari's fourth over.

  10. Notts 76-3 (Smith 26, Patel 39)published at 19 overs

    Target 301

Gareth Batty comes on and the Surrey captain keeps it tight with just four coming off the over.

  11. Notts 72-3 (Smith 24, Patel 37)published at 18 overs

    Target 301

The Notts pair can manage only three runs from Zafar Ansari's third over as the run rate edges past 7.

One of them, with Samit Patel looking the more likely, is going to have to start thinking about having a whack soon.

  12. Notts 69-3 (Smith 23, Patel 35)published at 17 overs

    Target 301

Samit Patel looks at ease at the crease though and he seems to have decided to go after Tom Curran.

He drives the first ball of the 20-year-old's over for yet another boundary. The 50 partnership comes up for Greg Smith and Patel as they take nine from the over.

  14. Notts 60-3 (Smith 23, Patel 27)published at 16 overs

    Target 301

Zafar Ansari continues and the Notts pair continue to struggle to get him away. Greg Smith is looking fidgety, the pressure of only managing to take singles seems to be getting to him.

  15. Notts 56-3 (Smith 21, Patel 25)published at 15 overs

    Target 301

Greg Smith can only manage a single off Tom Curran's.

Official word from Notts on Samit Patel's injury is that he's suffering from cramp. Perhaps he can get some advice from Kumar Sangakkara?

  16. Notts 55-3 (Smith 20, Patel 25)published at 14 overs

    Target 301

Gareth Batty decides it is time for some spin as Zafar Ansari enters the fray.

Five runs come from the left-arm spinner's first over.

  17. Notts 51-3 (Smith 18, Patel 23)published at 13 overs

    Target 301

Another excellently timed straight drive from Samit Patel off Tom Curran yields another boundary. He's doing a great job of keeping the score ticking over for Notts.

  18. Notts 46-3 (Smith 18, Patel 18)published at 12 overs

    Target 301

Surrey keep it tight and Sam Curran is milked for four singles in another fine over from the youngster. The run rate has just started to creep up, it's 6.7 at the moment.

  19. Notts 42-3 (Smith 16, Patel 16)published at 11 overs

    Target 301

It's time for the other Curran brother,Tom, who is just as highly thought of at Surrey.

Samit Patel times the ball sweetly as he punches the ball straight back past him for four, but that's the only real damage of the over.

  20. Notts 36-3 (Smith 15, Patel 11)published at 10 overs

    Target 301

A short ball is smashed away by Greg Smith but the Notts batsman picks out Aneesh Kapil in the deep.

Samit Patel is deceived by Sam Curran's slower ball but the ball just lands safely between three fielders. That could have been a fourth Notts wicket down
