It's hot out there - Jason Roy in particular is sweating like a teenager whose mum has just borrowed his laptop. Nice from Roy, firm cut into the gap at extra cover for three. Shoaib Malik recovers well with three dots off the last three balls.

"Pakistan must be frustrated there as it carried at a pretty nice catching height. The slip has made a bit of a mess of that one. Roy has had a bit of luck against Yasir Shah."

Thank you Stephan. And immediately Jason Roy gets a life! Thinnest of thin edges as he tries a delicate late cut, it flicks off the keeper's gloves and bamboozles first slip, who was going the other way. He can't cling on. Dicey for Roy, who is looking for his first ODI ton here.

Wallop! Another biggie from Jason Roy, who may have been worried that he'd hit it down long-on's throat. Instead, it clears the rope and takes Roy to his highest ODI score. Sixes in successive overs for England, so much excitement that I need a breather. Here's James Gheerbrant.

It's a good game of cat and mouse between the batsmen and the cunning Yasir. Bit of dancing from Roy, an adjustment from the bowler. Good stuff this, more intrigue than your usual mid-ODI overs.

Darkness continues to fall - it usually does. The Dubai dusk covers the entire stadium now. Malik, shirt untucked, tip-toes in and asks the question against Jason Roy. It's missing leg stump by so much that Chris Gaffaney has a smile. Having said that, replays say it would have shaved the leg peg, so wipe that grin off your face.

"Yasir Shah's getting some reasonable spin but this pitch isn't gripping or turning much. These two have set a good partnership, Jason Roy looked a bit shaky a while ago and when the next seamer comes on, they may attack."

  13. Eng 104-1 (Roy 60, Root 18)published at 22 overs

On our reality show theme, perhaps Yasir Shah could star in Yasir, I Can Boogie, where he teaches us to street dance. No rush from England yet, taking the singles on offer, looking to punish the bad ball, the very occasional big shot from Roy. Five singles from the over, so decent accumulation.

"As a batsman, when you get to 50 sometimes you think you've a level of achievement as you raise your bat. But in modern one-day international cricket, a real match-winning innings is 150. Jason Roy likes the pace coming on to the ball, but you have to be patient against the spinners."

  17. Eng 93-1 (Roy 56, Root 12)published at 20 overs

Roy flirts with danger, almost chipping Yasir Shah to the man at short mid-wicket. Yasir is strangling England here, so Roy has to chance his arm in order to break the shackles. A heave - it would be improper to call it anything more respectful than that - brings four through the leg side.

Well played, Jason Roy. After a scratchy start, particularly with some wobbles around off stump, the Surrey man has moved to a 64-ball half-century, his fourth in ODIs. There's been a couple of inside-edges, some nice drives through the on side, and some cute dabs to third man.
