"I thought England had a chance of winning this series but I didn't think that South Africa's batting would be so poor. I can't see how they are going to get out of this situation."

  2. SA 165-7published at 08:26

Another fact. South Africa haven't managed a stand of 100 in a Test match this year. How can that be right for the world number ones? Dean Elgar, more central midfielder than opening batsman, stands in a stocky crouch that points his backside to square leg. Just a single from Finn's over.

"Nick Compton is proving me entirely wrong. I criticised the speed of his innings yesterday but he scored a vital 85, so well played Compo."

  4. SA 164-7 (Elgar 86, Steyn 0)published at 08:22

It's turning. Square. Right-hander Steyn shuffles across his stumps and sees the ball spin down the leg side, testing wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, who masticates his gumshield as if it is some over-sized piece of chewing gum. A third ripper from Moeen misses everything and scoots for four byes.

Here's a fact for you. England opener Adam Lyth (remember him?) has as many Test hundreds in 2015 (one) as the entire South Africa team. Dean Elgar is looking to change that and could also become the first South African for 18 years to carry his bat. He drives the returning Finn straight for four, then defends behind the highest of front elbows.

Dale Steyn is the next man out of the hutch, greeted with the in-out field of a man who has a reputation for giving it some humpty. Looking again at the Abbott wicket, it was one of the limpest Test dismissals you will see. Push forward, bat, pad, catch. The review simply prolonged his embarrassment. By surviving three balls, Steyn looks a place too low.

Kyle Abbott is having a drink like a man who is sticking around. You're not Kyle, because that is a review as bad as those given to soppy rom-com The Wedding Date (yes, I was made to watch it on Christmas day). Clear inside edge to a Moeen Ali off-break, loop into the air, a diving James Taylor doing the rest at short leg. England are rampant and could be batting by lunch.

Surely this is another? Abbott bat-pad off Moeen, another Protea wilting? He wants another look...

As Rome falls around him, Dean Elgar remains like the last toffee penny in the Quality Street tin. England might be smelling blood - Stuart Broad prowling in the sunshine - but Elgar is still driving down the ground for four like a mini Graeme Smith. The fact he was aiming through the covers but got it straight was positively Smith-esque.

With that, England are into this tail that is longer than an Irish wolfhound. Kyle Abbott the new man, looking befuddled by the turn Moeen is getting. Speaking of turn, that and the low bounce really suggest advantage England. Looking again at the wicket, Moeen got some lovely drift and dip, while some trickster sneakily nailed Duminy's feet to the floor.

Gone! The introduction of off-spin does the trick after only three deliveries. It's a beauty from Moeen Ali - round the wicket, pitching middleish, turning and taking the outside edge of a static JP Duminy. Ben Stokes does the rest with a sharp catch at slip. It's been an ideal morning for England, who have grabbed the protea by the stem.

"You get so much more out of Broad when he is the leader of the attack. I would say to him 'you are now the leader now' because he responds to the responsibility superbly. We know Jimmy will still bowl exceptionally and wouldn't be affected."

  19. SA 149-5published at 07:58

Broad, all stubble and sweat-streaked hair, comes round the wicket to the crouching Elgar, who has plenty of catchers for company on the off side. As he's done for the best part of a day, Elgar shuffles and nurdles, allowing Duminy his first convincing stroke -  a drive straight to the cover fielder.
