Former South Africa all-rounder Mike Procter on TMS: "The team that lost in India and that has lost this series wasn't the team that got South Africa to number one.

"I didn't think we would lose as easily as we have but England are a very efficient side and Stokes' innings in Cape Town was the best I think I have ever seen."

"The great thing about Jack was he was uncomplicated, you knew exactly what you were going to get. When he was in the press box there was a wry humour. There was no cricket gossip that Jack didn't know.

"He was a great friend of John Woodcock, the great cricket writer, and when they got talking you could almost hear the electrical currents going."

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

"Broad bowled very well, Anderson quite well to start with - and he will bowl better the more overs he bowls - but to be brutally honest that was South Africa's morning. I thought 370 would have been ok for England but South Africa are still batting and have got themselves in a very good position.

"England have some serious batting to do. If they bat well there is a very good pitch to bat on."

There's no other way to describe it, Alastair Cook is stomping off. The skipper looks livid.

The players stroll off at the end of a session of two halves. England were on a roll first thing, but South Africa are now taking the game away from them. Quinton de Kock, on 85, has been given two reprieves. Very costly.

Ed Clamp: Bairstow may have got runs this series but his keeping is very questionable. He is not assertive enough.

I know what you're thinking. Yesterday we had a pop at Bairstow for diving in front of Cook, and now we're saying he should have gone for one. The difference is that today's was much closer to the keeper. He really didn't need to move far, but just watched it go by. Dane Piedt sees off an Anderson maiden. Maybe one set to go before lunch.

You're kidding. It's not a drop, because no one has gone for it, but Jonny Bairstow and Alastair Cook have watched an edge fly between them. Chris Woakes the bowler, Quitnon de Kock the batsman, on 80. It's gone right between keeper and slip Cook. Bairstow hasn't moved, Cook sort of flinched. You have to think that the man with the gloves should at least make an effort.

James Anderson, who I don't think has done a great deal of smiling on this tour, is wound up for another spell. He continues to get the ball to swing, but one goes too far down the leg side and South Africa get through for a bye. Runs quite readily available to the Proteas at the moment. England need the break to regroup.

    Jonathan Agnew
    BBC Test Match Special

"Jack did so many things, a very good cricketer for a start - quite an aggressive medium-pace seam bowler. He was part of the BBC team for many years and helped formed the PCA (Professional Cricketers' Association) where he was a very hard working secretary for many years.

"He had a dry sense of humour and he liked a flutter on the horses. It's a sad day and we send out commiserations to his family."

Dane Piedt looks far too handy to be batting at number 10. Nice balance, high elbow, a lovely drive that stings the hands of the mid-off fielder. You can feel the frustration rising in England. After the early wickets, they might well have expected to be batting by now.
