  1. SA 411-8 (De Kock 77, Piedt 10)published at 110 overs

Stokes twice gets too straight to Piedt, who picks him off through the leg side. A mix-up between Notts team-mates Alex Hales and James Taylor allows South Africa back for a couple. Taylor stares a hole though Hales before Piedt drives for three more. England are leaking runs now.

Leo Watson: So frustrating watching Moeen Ali play Test cricket when Rashid, who is a superior batsman and bowler, is 1000s of miles away!

Peter Vaz: Poor cricket from England. Letting South Africa get too many runs! Rigidly sticking to the established hierarchy doesn't help.

All a little quiet at the moment with just under half an hour to go before lunch. De Kock, who was dropped first thing this morning, continues to score, while Dane Piedt holds up an end. As Billy the Barmy Army trumpeter plays the theme from Rocky, De Kock walks across his stumps to disdainfully swat Woakes through mid-wicket, Kevin Pietersen-style. 400 up.

  9. SA 397-8published at 108 overs

The sun is playing a touch of hide and seek. Sometimes shining, sometimes behind the clouds. Three slips and a gully for Ben Stokes, who slips his in-duckers in at Dane Piedt. More solid stuff from the South Africa number 10. England have been OK this morning, but you just feel that South Africa might be getting too many.

Peter Vaz: Stokes again proving to be more dangerous than Anderson, without the benefit of the new ball, yet we persist with the hierarchy

Pete Bancroft: Don't see what Woakes adds to this team. Footitt a riskier option but far more likely to make a contribution.

  11. SA 395-8 (Woakes 18-2-80-1)published at 09:56

Hmmmm. Is De Kock taking de game away from England here? In the sunshine, Woakes serves up a bumper that De Kock hooks for four. Woakes shakes his head. I'd be shaking my head too, Christopher. Pitch the darn thing up. In the crowd, the trumpeter plays for the first time today.

  13. SA 390-8 (De Kock 64, Piedt 2)published at 09:51

The average first-innings total at Centurion is 320, so South Africa have already got themselves into a good position. The crowd is decent today, much busier for the weekend. In their is Mignon du Preez, the South Africa women's captain. Piedt drives Stokes for a couple, then does well not to get an edge when the ball goes past the bat. There looks to be more there for the bowlers than yesterday.

Those stats from Andrew Samson tell us that Piedt can more than hold a bat and he immediately looks comfortable against Woakes, defending off the back foot and ducking under the real short balls. Still work for England to do.

The wicket brings a change in bowling. No spin for Piedt to ease himself in to, it's the pace of Chris Woakes.

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

"Dane Piedt has six first-class half-centuries, with a best of 92 and an average of 15."

  19. SA 386-8 (Stokes 20-2-65-2)published at 104 overs

That partnership had stopped being an annoyance for England and had turned into a big problem. Not a misplaced wallet, but one lost with your bank cards, driving licence and picture of your first-born inside. Dane Piedt is the new man, doing well to survive another Stokes inswinger.
