Oh, what a moment that could be! Stuart Broad has had the wood on AB de Villiers in the Test matches and he almost has him first ball in the ODIs. De Villiers smashes him square - it goes hard to point, where a diving Jason Roy just can't quite cling on. He had it in his hands, would have been a pearler. And De Villiers responds by smashing Broad for four, then a huge six down the ground!

Now that is annoying. Duminy looks gone for all money, but he's saved by a fractional 'umpire's call' on impact. The ball was crashing into middle stump about two-thirds of the way up. That's one of those you feel very unlucky not to have given out on the field.

"It's dangerous when the umpire has given it not out. You have to be sure."

Now then! Stokes hits Duminy, back pad, the verdict is not out but England want another look...

"Where's Joe Root? He fields at second slip. It went quickly. Hales, who isn't a regular slip fielder, never looked like catching it. Root musn't be on the pitch."

That should have been number four! Good length from Woakes, scrambled seam, Duminy flashes and it goes hard to the slip cordon, where Alex Hales shells it. To make matters worse, Chris Jordan, the human Venus fly trap, has waiting to take the grab behind him! How crucial might that be?

"The wicket of De Villiers, if you can get it, is so big, that it has more impact than a normal batsman. Get De Villiers and there's a buzz out there."

  8. SA 67-3 (Stokes 4-0-17-1)published at 16 overs

Alex Hales makes a great stop in the deep to prevent four for De Villiers. Duminy's off the mark with a single off his toes.

"It's game on. There are possibilities for England. Woakes completely castled Du Plessis, who was playing the wrong line and the stumps were splattered. Morgan won't change the bowling at the moment."

Merlyn: Hold on Chris Woakes has done something...

Sue: Hm. Those people who were complaining about Woakes's selection have gone a bit quiet now, haven't they?

Pete Naylor: "Woakes doesn't take wickets" they say. Pfft. Du Plessis is still one of the best ODI players in the world. Big big wicket...

  11. SA 63-3published at 15 overs

So, JP Duminy is the new man - "not a man you'd pick to bat for your life" is the verdict of my colleague Stephan Shemilt. England have got a real chance in this game, this is not the strongest middle and lower-order you'll ever see.

"I think he played down the wrong line. It might have held it's line. It's a spectacular moment in the dusk. the bails flashing and flying in opposite directions. It's a big wicket."

Gone! That is an absolute peach! Morgan sticks with Woakes and hits the jackpot when the bowler produces a gorgeous delivery that nips off a leg-stump line and clatters middle and off. Spectacular. Faf in the hutch, England in the hunt.

  14. SA 63-2 (Du Plessis 34, De Villiers 0)published at 14 overs

AB de Villiers is the new man, and as long as he is at the crease, South Africa will be big favourites in this game. Now what does Eoin Morgan do? Does he go back to Stuart Broad?

"It didn't quite come on to the bat, which was a bit crooked. It was a slightly lazy shot."

File that one under 'classic Ben Stokes'. He has that knack of making things happen just when the match seems to be trundling along to an inevitable conclusion. Nothing special about the delivery, just cramped De Kock for room and found the fatal inside edge. Another wicket and England will think they're right in this game.

  17. SA 61-1published at 13 overs

That's better from Chris Woakes - six accurate deliveries, just one run from the over.

  18. Latest scorecardpublished at 16:51 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2016

    SA won toss

South Africa: 60-1 from 12 overs (target 263)

Batsmen: De Kock 24, Du Plessis 33

Fall of wickets: 2-1 (Amla 0)

Bowling figures: Broad 4-0-22-1, Topley 4-1-18-0, Woakes 2-0-8-0, Stokes 2-0-11-0

    England 262 from 47.5 overs: Root 109, Hales 50, Rabada 4-45, Tahir 3-46

This is very much the soft underbelly of England's limited-overs sides that is being probed. The batting unit looks pretty solid (even if they had an off day today) - but do they have enough wicket-takers in that bowling line-up when they don't have scoreboard pressure to aid their cause? Ben Stokes, with just 34 wickets from his 38 ODIs, is a case in point. He huffs and puffs through another high-effort, low-impact over for the loss of three runs.

  20. SA 57-1 (Woakes 2-0-8-0)published at 11 overs

So, Chris Woakes to complete the 11th over. He offers a tempter outside off first up, but Faf du Plessis's judgment remains sound. Then Woakes drops a bit short and Faf shovels him through cow corner for four.
