"Joe Root six hitter! That was a fantastic shot because they are big boundaries here. Pace on the ball is what batsmen desperately want and that's why there has been talk of an extra spinner for England."

  2. 6 runs

    Eng 27-1published at 4 overs

Frustrate who? The first six of the day. Root sniffs out one that is marginally short, goes way back and pulls miles over square leg for six, a la Michael Vaughan against the Aussies, 2002-03.

    Eng 21-1published at 3.5 overs

My boy Shapoor is struggling here. He tried to field off his own bowling, went down like a mighty oak tree, then hobbled around with what looks like a dicky groin. He is, however, managing to frustrate Joe Root.

Looking again, it's a pretty poor shot from Roy, who may well have been given a bit of a send-off as the walked past a fired-up Afghan side. Wonderkid Joe Root is the new man, watching as Vince plays the second lovely straight drive of the day.

"He's hardly faced the left-arm spinner and with Roy he goes for it, when it doesn't work it looks sloppy. The spinner is looking good but he is not actually spinning the ball. Roy went ahead and missed it. They must not be too greedy and that is the reason I thought they may have bowled first because they don't know what a good score is."

    Roy b Hamza 5 (Eng 16-1)

Gone this time! It's not James Vince, but Jason Roy, who basically runs past one to lose his leg stump. It's been a good over from Amir Hamza, who is really getting the ball to skid. That's just what happens here, with Hamza skipping the ball between bat and pad. Stump out of the ground. Full pint.

  10. Missed stumpingpublished at 2.2 overs

    Eng 15-0

Nice from James Vince, inside-out against the left-arm spin of Hamza to take four over the covers. Next ball... missed! He could have been stumped, he might also have been dropped too. Mohammad Shahzad gives us a double bubble error.

"I think they leave some grass on the pitch to try and give it a bit of pace. I don't expect the ball to move, I wonder if there would be this much grass on it if India were playing, not being conspiratorial."

  12. Eng 11-0published at 2 overs

Shot lad. Jason Roy plays the dreamiest of straight drives, whistling back past Shapoor for four. Who says you can't play proper shots in Twenty20 cricket?

"There is the keeper Shahzad, he is almost a cricketer from a bygone age. He is not the most athletic, he has a bright red helmet on, he is almost square in shape, he took a catch the other day where the ball wedged between his legs."

  15. Eng 7-0published at 1.3 overs

Left-armer Shapoor Zadran, one of my favourite cricketers in the world, shares the new ball. Why's he my one of my faves? Hair like Gerry Francis, an approach longer than an airport runway and genuine pace. Also, his celebration when he hit the winning runs against Scotland at the World Cup last year was outstanding.

"One of the areas where Afghanistan can be exploited is their mobility in the field, partly because they are quite an old team and it is also a big ground."

  17. Eng 2-0published at 1 overs

Hamza has a slip, looking to turn the ball away from this pair of right-handers. The off side is packed, with Vince unable to force the ball away despite giving himself some room. The ball just skids on, three dots build tension, Vince eventually gets away with a short single. Very good first over, though.

Rory Hall: First note of Afghanistan's national anthem sounded like it was going to break into HoP's 'Jump Around'. Slightly disappointed.
