Hampshire's Michael Carberry was the batting star, finally making a Championship century after being unable to convert any of his 10 fifties last summer.

Defending champions Yorkshire looked more like their old selves following two draws as they bowled out Notts at Trent Bridge, while Leicestershire and Kent had productive days in DIvision Two - along with England skipper Alastair Cook, whose prolific start to the summer continued with an unbeaten half century against Worcestershire.

Opener Paul Horton finishes unbeaten on 70 following an excellent first-day display by Leicestershire at Hove. Neil Dexter (28) shared a 100-run stand with Horton before falling lbw to Ollie Robinson, but Mark Cosgrove (20*) kept him company to the close.

Sussex coach Mark Davis will have questions about their batting effort earlier in the day when only four batsmen - most notably Ed Joyce (56) - reached double figures and skipper Luke Wright, still absent following a wrist operation, was badly missed.

Tino Best survives to the close, helping himself to a second boundary in the final over, but it is Michael Carberry and Liam Dawson who take the batting plaudits on day one at the Ageas Bowl. Carberry rediscovered the way to three figures - after a century-less 2015 - and made 107, while Dawson was 87 not out at stumps, having batted for almost four hours and faced 191 balls.

Toby Roland-Jones was the most successful Middlesex bowler with 3-87, but skipper Adam Voges is unlikely to appear again in the match after being hit on the head by a throw. 

Ben Stokes, Chris Rushworth and Brydon Carse take two wickets each for Durham on a day in which a number of Surrey batsmen missed out on the chance to make a major score. Arun Harinath (96), Steven Davies (87) and Jason Roy (64) were the main contributors for the home side, who were 226-2 at one stage before the visitors fought back.

A highly satisfactory day for Kent players and supporters as Daniel Bell-Drummond (62*) and Tom Latham (48*) share an unbroken century stand to the close. 

Bell-Drummond is certainly one of England's brightest young batting prospects and he will be hoping tom push on to three figures on day two just in case the selectors are prepared to cast their net beyond Division One ahead of the Test series against Sri Lanka.

Lancashire captain Steven Croft reaches stumps on 71 not out, with his side in a handy position after a well-contested opening day at Taunton. Alviro Petersen missed out on a hundred against one of his former clubs, when he fell for 83, but Alex Davies (32*) kept Croft company until the close.

BBC Essex's Nick Gledhill at New Road:

"Essex added a further 39 runs in 15.5 overs before bad light ended play for the day as Alastair Cook and Tom Westley extended their unbeaten second wicket stand to 128. 

"Their progress was slowed by some tighter bowling from Jack Shantry and Ed Barnard but, significantly, Worcestershire could not break through on a very true pitch. 

"More rain is forecast for tomorrow so Essex will be looking for a 400 plus total in quick time to put scoreboard pressure on their hosts."

BBC Radio Derby's Dave Fletcher:

"Shiv Thakor and Tony Palladino shared an eighth-wicket stand of 105 as Derbyshire fought hard to get back into the game at Wantage Road.

"Northamptonshire gained the ascendancy in the afternoon session with Rory Kleinveldt claiming three wickets in nine balls as the visitors were reduced to 161-7.

"But Thakor was unbeaten on 60 when bad light forced an early finish, Palladino having fallen one short of what would have been a richly-deserved half century."

Sussex 163 v Leicestershire 99-1

Former Lancashire opener Paul Horton is proving a very shrewd acquisition for Leicestershire, providing nous as well as runs at the top of the order. He hits two fours in one over from Ollie Robinson to reach his third half-century for his new county, and he would surely love to turn this one into a three-figure score.

He celebrates by hitting two more boundaries in the next over, bowled by Ajmal Shahzad.

That may be it for Craig Overton's hopes of getting onto Strictly Come Dancing (see 17:38) as bad light prompts umpires Jeff Evans and Alex Wharf to take the players off at Taunton. 

Lancashire captain Steven Croft is there on 67, with Alex Davies 28 not out after edging over the slips which may have made Craig's twin brother Jamie - the unlucky bowler - hopping mad.

BBC Somerset's Anthony Gibson:

"Craig Overton pinned Alviro Petersen lbw with the new ball, just as he and Steven Croft looked to be taking the game completely away from Somerset.  Even so, their stand of 125 has put the Red Rose firmly in the driving seat.  

"One feels already that one of these sides is going to have to either bat very badly, or bowl very well, if we're to get a positive outcome on an easy-paced, flat pitch."

High time I updated you on events at Canterbury, where New Zealand's Tom Latham is settling nicely into life as a county opening batsman. He and England prospect Daniel Bell-Drummond staved off the new-ball threat from Glamorgan and are now starting to enjoy themselves against the third and fourth seamers.

Off again at New Road where rain forced a lengthy interruption earlier in the day. Apart from the time taken out of the game, the Essex dressing room must be a happy place, thanks to an unbroken stand of 128 between Tom Westley (70*) and England captain Alastair Cook (53*).

Cook has now made the small matter of 386 runs in four games, with the rest of this innings, and perhaps another one later in the game to come.
