ALASTAIR COOK REACHES FIFTYpublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Essex 141-1 v Worcestershire

Division Two bowlers are going to be very glad indeed when Alastair Cook leaves county cricket behind to resume Test captaincy duties. Having already hit two centuries this season, he brings up another fifty with a boundary off Jack Shantry. Another 15 overs left in this rain-interrupted day.

  2. Close of playpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Nottinghamshire 261 v Yorkshire

That's it for the day at Trent Bridge with bad light foiling Yorkshire's hopes of starting their first innings after bowling out the home side in 69.2 overs. Opener Steve Mullaney made an aggressive 78 for Notts, but they failed to capitalise on that as Jack Brooks (4-74) and Adil Rashid (3-29) led the fightback.

Roy brings up half centurypublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Surrey 321-4 v Durham

There's a half century for England T20 opener Jason Roy from his middle-order role in Surrey';s Championship side. He reaches it off 71 balls - quite a slow knock by his standards - with a single off Chris Rushworth. Surrey doing very nicely, thank you, but can these two see off the new ball?

  4. Bad light stops playpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Derbyshire 275-8 v Northamptonshire

Looks like gloom has descended upon the East Midlands. The teams are off the field at Wantage Road with Shiv Thakor 60 not out and partner Luke Fletcher on two.

  5. Bad light stops playpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Nottinghamshire 261 v Yorkshire

Having taken the final Notts wicket, Yorkshire have been unable to start their reply at Trent Bridge - and they may have to wait until tomorrow to do so...

WICKET Petersen (lbw C Overton 83)published at 17:15 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Lancashire 250-4 v Somerset

Craig Overton strikes an important blow for Somerset by getting rid of former Somerset team-mate Alviro Petersen, who hit two sixes and eight fours. He added 125 in 32 overs with Steven Croft, who remains on 58 not out.

  7. Surrey pair steady inningspublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Surrey 310-4 v Durham

Surrey collect their third batting bonus point as the total passes 300 at The Oval. Having lost Steven Davies and Arun Harinath in quick succession before tea, Jason Roy (45*) and Zafar Ansari (24*) are building another sizeable partnership - it's currently worth 76.

  8. wicket

WICKET Palladino (b White 49)published at 17:03 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Derbyshire 267-8 v Northamptonshire

We really need to stop saying positive things about teams and players in these text commentaries, it puts the mockers on, and no mistake. No sooner has my colleague talked about Derbyshire's recovery (see 16:58 entry) than Tony Palladino is leg before to Graeme White's left-arm spin. He falls just short of a half-century, but Shiv Thakor is still there on 57.

By the way, I've just seen a video of Adam Rossington making a leg-side stumping earlier today - what an absolutely brilliant piece of work. Take a look @CountyChamp.

  9. Derbyshire recover wellpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Derbyshire 266-7 v Northamptonshire

    BBC Radio Northampton’s Alex Winter:

“It was desperate for Derbyshire earlier at 161-7. They badly needed a steady hour and Shiv Thakor and Tony Palladino provided just that before tea.

“Now this pair are playing more confidently and have raised largely untroubled century stand for the eighth wicket that has also brought up a couple of batting points.

“They’re still maybe a fair few short of what could be a par score on what’s been a pretty good wicket to bat on throughout this first day."

  11. Century stand by Lancashire pairpublished at 16:53 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Lancashire 231-3 v Somerset

It may not have been the most exciting day's cricket at Taunton, but Alviro Petersen and Steven Croft are doing a sterling job for Lancashire as their fourth-wicket partnership reaches three figures. They have each hit two sixes, with Petersen now 75* and Croft on 49.

  13. wicket

WICKET Broad (run out 36)published at 16:43 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Nottinghamshire 261 v Yorkshire

The Notts innings comes to an end as a diving Stuart Broad is beaten by Jack Brooks' throw from the deep and run out by England team-mate Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps for a bright and breezy 36 off 34 balls. Two points for Notts, three for the defending champions - but bad light delays the start of Yorkshire's reply.

Carberry exit follows Dawson fiftypublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Hampshire 228-4 v Middlesex

Liam Dawson reaches a 117-ball half-century with a boundary off Toby Roland-Jones, but his partnership of exactly 100 with Michael Carberry comes to an end, when the latter is taken at second slip from the bowling of James Harris. Carberry's innings lasted 211 balls and featured 14 fours.

  15. wicket

WICKET Robson (b Magoffin 1)published at 16:33 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Sussex 163 v Leicestershire 20-1

After an excellent bowling display, Leicestershire now have to match it with the bat - but they make a poor start as Angus Robson is bowled in Steve Magoffin's second over.

  16. Intervalpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Glamorgan 260 v Kent

Mitchell Claydon takes two wickets in three balls to finish with 4-59 as Glamorgan's disappointing first-innings batting effort comes to an end. Andrew Salter is caught behind - a fourth victim for wicketkeeper Adam Rouse - and Harry Podmore is trapped lbw.

Craig Meschede top-scored with 63 - including a six and 10 fours - for the Welsh county, who take two batting points, while Kent claim the maximum three for bowling.

  17. Better news at New Roadpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Essex 105-1 v Worcestershire

Play to resume at 4:40 at New Road providing there is no more rain, but the light is not great.

  18. wicket

WICKET Bird (lbw Rashid 4)published at 16:24 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Nottinghamshire 247-9 v Yorkshire

Stuart Broad is using 'the long handle' to try and add quick runs to the Notts total, but Jackson Bird becomes spinner Adil Rashid's third victim as the googly proves his undoing.

  19. Voges taken to hospitalpublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

An unfortunate incident at the Ageas Bowl - we wish Adam Voges the best for a speedy recovery.

  20. Intervalpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 1 May 2016

    Glamorgan 260-8 v Kent

BBC Radio Wales Sport's Nick Webb at Canterbury:

"Craig Meschede (63) and Graham Wagg (40) led a partial recovery for Glamorgan after they had slumped to 124-6 in the early afternoon.

"Kent fast bowler Matt Coles limped off early in the session after taking three wickets, but returned to the field and may bowl later."
