Vince defies Yorkshire attackpublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Hampshire 93-3 v Yorkshire 593-9 dec

Batting is never easy against the most potent attack in the County Championship - so potent that Yorkshire could even afford to leave winter signing David Willey out of their team for this game - but James Vince is showing a captain's resolve for Hampshire, reaching his fifty off 102 balls with back-to-back boundaries off Steven Patterson.

Trott reaches half centurypublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Warwickshire 133-4 v Middlesex 452

He may have decided that international cricket is no longer for him, but Jonathan Trott's appetite for runs is undiminished and he takes a single off Toby Roland-Jones to reach a 99-ball fifty. Warwickshire may need him to double, treble or even quadruple that.

  3. wicket

WICKET Anderson (c Read b Broad 6)published at 17:08 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Lancashire 249-8 v Nottinghamshire 242

I'm guessing Stuart Broad is feeling pretty sheepish after dismissing his England colleague - or did the moment of conquest prompt a pavilion-rattling yell of triumph? I don't suppose the likes of 'Fiery Fred' and 'Typhoon' Tyson gave two hoots about roughing up some of their Test team-mates.

  4. wicket

WICKET Smith (lbw Brooks 11)published at 16:58 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Hampshire 66-3 v Yorkshire 593-3 dec

No photos from Headingley today, so I can't tell you whether Jack Brooks is still living up to his 'headband warrior' nickname. He has been a prolific wicket-taker in the last two seasons to help Yorkshire to a title double and there's his first in this game as Will Smith departs. The follow-on target looks a long, long way off for the visitors.

UPDATE: Thank you Yorkshire CCC for putting up a video so quickly - yes, Brooks is still wearing the headband.

  5. Vince needs score to make Test casepublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Hampshire 53-2 v Yorkshire 593-9 dec

BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James at Headingley:

"James Vince (26*) is coming up to 90 balls faced, which is not his normal game. He and Will Smith are fighting hard to keep out the Yorkshire attack.

"Vince is just about the only batsman with a realistic claim to a Test place, not to have a big score under his belt even at this early stage of the season.

"Last month Vince, who was part of the England World T20 squad, passed up an opportunity to enter the IPL auction because he wanted to give himself every opportunity. This game - and with Hampshire in this situation - would be very timely."

  6. wicket

WICKET Wagner (c Taylor b Broad 1)published at 16:43 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Lancashire 229-7 v Nottinghamshire 242

And the wickets keep coming at Old Trafford. Neil Wagner is on the receiving end after taking 6-66 on day one, lasting only six balls as attempts an ambitious drive off Stuart Broad and is safely taken at cover.

  7. wicket

WICKET Davies (lbw Ball 55)published at 16:38 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Lancashire 228-6 v Nottinghamshire 242

Lancashire look set for a first-innings lead against Notts, but they are certainly not finding it easy. Alex Davies becomes Jake Ball's third victim after a 72-run stand with Liam Livingstone, having hit seven fours in a 107-ball innings.

Oh to be young and flexible again...the good photos keep on coming from Hove (see 14.41 entry) where seam bowling prospect George Garton earlier claimed the wicket of Ravi Bopara - caught behind for 17.

  9. wicket

WICKET Chopra (b Murtagh 57)published at 16:27 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Warwickshire 108-3 v Middlesex 452

Important wicket for Middlesex straight after tea as Tim Murtagh sends back Varun Chopra. Sam Hain comes out to join Jonathan Trott, who has 35 to his name.

    Warwickshire 108-2 v Middlesex 452

    Hampshire 42-2 v Yorkshire 593-3 dec

    Derbyshire 444 v Gloucestershire

    Essex 199-6 v Sussex 360

  13. Key calls time on Kent careerpublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Rob KeyImage source, Rex Features

Kent and former England batsman Rob Key has announced his retirement at the age of 36.

He scored more than 19,400 runs during his career and played 15 Tests, five one-day internationals and one T20 match for the national team.

I remember stopping at a 'gas' station near Orlando, Florida in 2002 and looking in an English newspaper to see how he was getting on in his Test debut.

(To save you looking it up, he made 17 against India at Trent Bridge - and it was Steve Harmison's first England match too).

  14. wicket

WICKET Pettini (lbw van der Gugten 27)published at 15:59 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Leicestershire 224-5 v Glamorgan 348

Maybe not the most important wicket of the day, but trying telling that to Australia-born, Dutch limited-overs international Timm van der Gugten (apologies for overlooking your second m yesterday, Timm) as he claims his maiden scalp for Glamorgan.

According to Google translate, 'well done' in Dutch is 'goed gedaan'.

  16. 150 runs

Madsen marathon endspublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Derbyshire 444 v Gloucestershire - tea

Wayne Madsen may be running out of partners but his iron concentration shows no sign of wavering. A single off Kieran Noema-Barnett takes him to 150 and he's now batted close to seven and three-quarter hours. Resolute display indeed.

Oh dear, having seen off Alastair Cook earlier in the day, I've now put the text comm curse on Madsen too. It's a stumping by Gareth Roderick as spinner Jack Taylor achieves figures of 4-61. For the stat completists among you, Madsen batted for 465 minutes, faces 329 balls and struck 21 fours.

BBC Radio Gloucestershire's Bob Hunt at Bristol:

"It was slow going at times, but Derbyshire are finally all out at Bristol. Wayne Madsen batted with immense discipline and Gloucestershire now have a tricky evening session to negotiate, but in reality the wicket looks harmless enough and they'd be disappointed if they lost more than a couple of wickets."

Maybe James Vince will prove to be a snake charmer?

If anyone is interested, the word that means 'fear of snakes' is ophidiophobia.

  18. dropped catch

Let-off for Choprapublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Warwickshire 89-2 v Middlesex 452

BBC WM's Richard Wilford at Lord's:

"This is a big season for former Warwickshire skipper Varun Chopra after stepping down from the role over the winter. He completed an attractive 50 off 68 balls, lifting the Bears after the early loss of Westwood and Bell. Chopra was then spilled by Adam Voges at first slip off Toby Roland-Jones."

  19. wicket

WICKET Westley (c Robinson b Briggs 86)published at 15:29 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Essex 190-5 v Sussex 360

It's curtains for Tom Westley at Hove as he clips a ball from left-arm spinner Danny Briggs into the hands of mid-wicket. I wonder what expression that prompted on the face of Ollie Robinson (see 14.41 entry).

Jesse Ryder, though, collects a single off Ajmal Shahzad to reach a 70-ball fifty, having been joined by Essex skipper Ryan ten Doeschate.

  20. wicket

WICKET Carberry (c Lees b Plunkett 19)published at 15:26 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Hampshire 34-2 v Yorkshire 593-9 dec

That's a big blow for Hampshire as Michael Carberry edges and Alex Lees dives to take a really good slip catch. IT's certainly been a good day so far for Liam Plunkett.
