Oh dear, looks like I've put the text commentator's curse on the England captain. Australian Steve Magoffin is one of the most consistent seam bowlers around the county circuit and he soon finds the edge of Cook's bat with first-day centurion Chris Nash taking the catch at second slip.

Five balls, one run - is that it for the day for the Essex opener?

  2. Cook falls into linepublished at 11:23 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

    Essex 5-0 v Sussex 360

England captain Alastair Cook has fallen into line with ECB helmet regulations, so now to the business in hand. Another big score after last week's century against Gloucestershire will certainly have him in fine fettle ahead of the Sri Lanka Test series.

    Sussex 360 v Essex

We'll soon know which helmet Alastair Cook intends to wear as Essex have taken only one over to polish off Sussex for the addition of five runs to the total. Jamie Porter bowls Ajmal Shahzad (24) and Steve Magoffin with his final two deliveries to leave himself on a hat-trick at the start of the second innings.

BBC Sussex's Adrian Harms at Hove:

"Extraordinary start to the day at Hove as Jamie Porter takes two wickets in two deliveries and Sussex are all out for 360. Great fightback from Essex as Sussex were 188-0 soon after lunch yesterday."

BBC WM's Richard Wilford at Lord's:

"Don't be fooled by the photo taken half an hour ago, the sky has filled in at Lord's and it could be a bowler's morning. Middlesex resumed on 317 for four, Sam Robson unbeaten on 175."

  6. Lancashire face batting testpublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

BBC Radio Manchester's Scott Read at Old Trafford:

“Lancashire showed their bowling credentials on Day One to dismiss Nottinghamshire for 242 on a pitch which looks a belter to bat and score which seems below par.

"New signing  Neil Wagner claimed six wickets the best return by a Lancashire player on debut since 1923, but today the challenge for the newly-promoted side comes with the bat.

"They start 217 runs behind with youngster Haseeb Hameed on six and Luke Procter unbeaten on 17, facing a fearsome looking bowling attack under thick cloudy skies at Old Trafford.”

  7. Which 'lid' for Cook?published at 10:58 British Summer Time 18 April 2016

One question we should get an answer to today is will Alastair Cook wear a helmet which complies with the England and Wales Cricket Board's new safety regulations? The England captain is set to open the batting against Sussex, who will resume on 355-8 at Hove.

Last week Cook wore an old helmet and was later 'spoken to'. Judging by this morning's nets photo, it looks like he has a new model. Will he wear in the middle? We shall see.
