"I think it's worth having a go at Joe Root with a couple of short balls when he first comes to the crease. He's always looking to play: play the pull shot, or the back-foot punch."

All incredibly curious. Little atmosphere for the first hour, then two Sri Lanka wickets in the same over are greeted by virtual silence inside Headingley. I'm still coming to terms with the looseness of Cook's drive, while the jury remains out on whether Compton could have done any more with his dismissal. New man Root gets a touch of short stuff from Chameera but is happy to watch it go by.

I don't think that has bounced a great deal, you know. I'm not even sure it's moved too much. If anything, it's straightened a fraction from the angle. If Compton's defensive poke was beaten by the good work of Shanaka, then Cook's shot was simply awful. The skipper has to having a long, hard look at himself back in the dressing room. One brings two and all that. Joe Root the new man.

"It hit high up on the splice area of the bat and first slip took a nice low catch. It's very disappointing for Compton, but it wasn't a bad delivery and any batsman is vulnerable when they first come in."

"That's not a bad cherry to get when you're just arriving at the crease - a bit of bounce, on and around that fourth-stump line."

Oh, Nick Compton. The man under pressure lasts only three balls and goes for a duck. It can happen to anyone, and it wasn't a bad shot, it just doesn't look great. A tentative prod forwards, an edge to first slip, an accusing look at the pitch. Dasun Shanaka, the debutant, has taken two in an over and England are suddenly on the back foot.

"Cook had been denied the strike for the last three or four overs, stuck on 16 for a while. When he's not quite on form, the cover drive finds him out."

Gone! Where did that come from? Alastair Cook will have to wait for the 10,000-run milestone after playing a pretty awful drive to give Dasun Shanaka a first Test wicket. Miles wide of off stump, Cook reaching for it, getting nowhere near and only edging behind to Dinesh Chandimal. How curious.

"I think Sri Lanka have bowled pretty much the length required, they haven't given away many scoring opportunities."

Vic Marks adds: "But they problem is they haven't got anyone out, because I think batting will get easier."

Chameera is getting more bounce than Tigger's tail, but that helps Alex Hales, who has been starved of genuine pace on to the bat this morning. Wide of off stump, Hales throws his hands through it and gets four behind point. While Hales has tickled the gas, it's hard to see Cook reaching the 36 he needs for 10,000 before lunch.

Now then, a first bowl for Dasun Shanaka, the all-rounder making his Test debut. Medium-pace, whippy action, Alex Hales not really sure what to make of it and getting beaten outside off stump when his feet are stuck in concrete. Other than that, it's all very sedate, which has been the theme of the morning. Steady cricket, small crowd, no great threat to the batsmen.

More from the pacy Chameera at Headingley that isn't basking in sunshine, but is enjoying a smattering of the warm stuff. The fresh-faced right-armer likes to test the middle of the track and bangs a couple in, with Hales working through mid-wicket for two.

Nice from Hales, reaching out to drive a wide one from Mathews to the cover boundary, complete with flourishing follow-through. More sunshine over Headingley, Hales following up with another boundary that is almost a carbon copy of his back-foot drive from before the drinks break. Runs coming more freely - 11 from the over.
