"For English cricket to win away from home it has to be runs on the board, then the spinners come into play. I'm looking around and the spin cupboard is bare. Rashid isn't bowling well, but could be a matchwinner. If Monty can flick them out like he used to, he could get back in the side."

"How well is Monty Panesar bowling for Northants? India wouldn't want to create turners if he goes there. It will be as tough as it gets for England this winter. Where are the spinners, who will stand up for that tour?"

"England need a batting order that has got confidence. When they have that looking better I would think about managing senior bowlers. Item one has to be less reliance on Cook and Root."

  9. Would a 'Super Series' make you think differently as a captain?published at 13:30 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

    Michael Vaughan

"I wouldn't give a damn. I would just want to win for my team. I don't think the 'Super Series' has got any relevance. To announce it last night, I don't think anyone can really put it together for this series. In the future it might be something we look back on and say, 'that Andrew Strauss is a genius'. But at the moment I can't see how it well make cricket gel together."

"T20 should drag 50-over cricket. I doubt if you could find me two in 10 people who genuinely love 50-over cricket. Test cricket is the pinnacle and you dilute it by dragging it into 50-over cricket. Fifty-over cricket has failed, it's had its time. It could be scrapped. A seven-match T20 series would sell out."

  13. Is the 'Super Series' a good idea?published at 13:23 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"I don't get it. It doesn't rock my boat. I think T20 cricket and Test cricket is a different sport. The focus has to be how do we make Test cricket stand alone. By bringing them all together, you will dilute Test match cricket.

"The administrators have to look at Test cricket. They have to make promotion and relegation, so there's a relevance."

Andrew Strauss on day-night Tests: "There's much more of a will around the world to embrace day-night Tests. There's still some niggley issues, but, in principle, I'm for it. If people can come after work and see a stunning spectacle in the five-day format, I'm for it."

Andrew Strauss on appointing Trevor Bayliss as England coach: "I felt we need to make a change. I had some ideas on a few people that I knew.

"I didn't know Trevor but the more I looked into it the more I liked his CV. You're looking for someone to be able to adapt - and then he also had a very good record in white-ball cricket. Speaking to him over the phone, I got a really good idea of his understanding of the game, which was very well connected with my views. The more I spoke to him, the more I thought, 'this guy will do well'."

Andrew Strauss on his tenure as director of England cricket"When you take on a job like this, I was pretty confident I knew what I was doing to the England team. Thankfully we have seen an uplift in our performances and our white-ball team is playing a very different style of cricket.

"But this job is much broader than that - and I've loved every minute. This is an opportunity for me to make a difference in some way. And we all like to be challenged, don't we?"
