But that, quite literally, is for another day.

Proceedings have come to a rather soggy end on the opening day of the Test summer, one that saw England wobbling, then stabilised by Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow.

I've just seen some shots of a very dark, very wet, very deserted Headingley. One hopes that isn't a sign of things to come for the rest of the match. The stewards who are forced to stand on the outfield, guarding the covers, remain. Do they have to stand there all night?

That's one helluva stat, isn't it? When Bairstow gets to 50, he goes big. That's a reason to be excited about tomorrow.

"Jonny Bairstow is in the form of his life, so confident he's almost over-confident.

"Ben Stokes played a poor shot. He hit three fours then spooned one to mid-on.

"I'm really pleased for Hales because his footwork was more in South Africa. He got his head down and worked."

It's all set up for a rather intriguing first session tomorrow, no? Game in the balance, if not slightly tipped towards Sri Lanka. Two England batsmen starting again, one looking for a maiden ton, the other after his first ton at home.

"Sri Lanka bowled rubbish in the first hour - rat pace, wide - then suddenly they pitched it up. Headingley will repay you if you bowl fullish.

"Compton didn't do anything especially wrong - it wasn't a bad shot to a ball around off stump, a fairly fullish length. It will put more pressure on him - but you've got to handle it.

"Vince's wasn't a great shot - he was playing on the up and it just did a tiny bit."

More from Dasun Shanaka on TMS: "It's a great honour to get the wickets of Alastair Cook and Joe Root.

"We are still in a good position. If we get early wickets in the morning we can keep them to a low total.

"I'm a batting all-rounder. I can swing the ball, but mainly I'm a batsman."

"Ryan Harris caused Cook all sorts of problems by bowling full and wide outside off stump. He gave him none of that - get him out of his comfort zone. That's what Shanaka did - he got him driving at a wide one. You go driving on the up, early on, you're a gonner."

Sri Lanka seamer Dasun Shanaka, who ended the day with 3-30, on TMS: "I'm delighted because it's my debut. There were suitable conditions for me and I'm very happy about that.

"When the captain gave me the ball I was nervous. In two or three balls I got the rhythm.

"I saw video clips of the England batsmen and wanted to bowl the driving length."

More from Alex Hales on TMS: "So far, I'm very happy. I knew I had to dig deep and bat for the rest of the day.

"It was a combination of good bowling and bounce from the wicket. We'll be ready for that and hopefully our bowlers will get it right.

"In South Africa I was tentative outside off stump. I've worked on leaving and playing with intent, looking to be more decisive.

"The first hour in the morning will be massive in shaping this game. It's delicately balanced, but we have the momentum."

"Alex Hales was the success of the day - the restraint, to work hard, not just to play crash-bang-wallop shots. Today he played a couple of those early on, but then he reined himself in. He changed his way of playing. It wasn't always pretty."

England batsman Alex Hales on TMS: "It's been a tough day. The ball swung and seamed throughout.

"It was fantastic from Jonny to counter-attack in that manner. It was just good, strong cricket shots. That's the way he plays - looking to put pressure back on the bowler.

"They bowled fuller in the second hour. When they adjusted the length it was tough work. Once they attacked the kneeroll it became a lot harder."
