"James Vince played nicely, I like the look of his footwork, he played some nice shots but he was teased by Siriwardena and he didn't play a cover drive or a slog - just a slap. Alastair Cook is still waiting for his 10,000th run, but he's going to play another two or three years so he should get 12,000 or 13,000 runs. Sri Lanka took him out of his comfort zone, made him play away from his body and once you get him like that, like Ryan Harris did for Australia, he's in trouble."

Sri Lanka all-rounder Milinda Siriwardana on Test Match Special: "It was a brilliant day for us. We got six wickets and the conditions are good. It's not easy to get wickets, so we're happy. We fielded really well. We took the half-chances.

"Joe Root is a good player, but we have good bowlers and we have plans.

"The conditions are better than the first game. It will turn and it's good for the batsmen.

"it was cold this morning. I had the hand-warmers in my pocket. It was the coldest I've played cricket in. 

"We are still improving and we'll see tomorrow how it goes."

"It was a brilliant catch as he misread it. But I'm of the view that if you don't hit the ball in the air then they can't catch you, so it was a false shot. I don't think trying to hook like that is his game. If the selectors are picking him to play a certain way, that's the way he should play. That's how he makes runs in county cricket, that's how he played in Durban and helped win the Test. If you don't want him to play that anchor role, then don't pick him. England have tried to play more positively in the last couple of years, but if he tries to get sucked in like that, he'll lose his wicket. Somebody needs to have a word with him."

"I liked Hales' honesty there. He didn't make excuses, he said he tried to hit the ball too hard, and he's got a great chance to make a spot in Test cricket. Root came in and played differently, he has a nice range of shots and he knocked the ball around for ones and twos, making it look easy. He never went for the big shots, he's just a touch player, but then he tried to work a ball from outside off stump to the leg side and it got big on him."

England opener Alex Hales on Test Match Special: "I'm pleased with the form I'm in. When you get in you want to make a big score, but I'd have taken it at the start of the day.

"It's was my own fault, I probably try to hit it too hard. Mathews, at slip, went a little deeper and took a brilliant catch.

"This is a better pitch to bat on than Headingley so I felt a little bit more fluent today. There's still things to work on and I feel like I'm improving every day.

"This has been a learning curve, enjoying being as good as I can in all three formats."

"Sri Lanka's top order batting looks pretty ordinary and inexperienced, but I think he got it right by batting first. The ball didn't bounce and it was a low, ordinary bounce - the pitch might get more difficult later on. But if you want to sum up the day, it was the catching of Sri Lanka. Their bowling was tidy, but one or two indiscreet shots kept England in check. Angelo Mathews' catch of Alex Hales at slip was outstanding."

Themes of the day? England players missing out on big scores, Sri Lanka catching anything in a 10-yard radius, empty seats and Nick Compton. Watching him bat was a tense affair, ultimately ended by a poor shot and a stunning catch.

"I like the way the left-arm spinners have bowled, just teasing England outside off stump, and perhaps there were a few naive shots from England. Vince just had a slap at the ball and was caught. Nick Compton is going to be under a bit of pressure - people say he's stagnant and doesn't turn over the strike, and then when he does go for the big shot he gets caught by an absolutely brilliant catch."

"There will be a few disappointed English batsmen on a day when they could have filled their boots, but Sri Lanka fielded brilliantly and that's kept them in the game as England gave a few soft dismissals away. Sri Lanka caught a couple of absolute rip-snorters, they've plugged away and got their reward."

That's yer lot. Chris Woakes survives a streaky edge through the slips and England sleep on 310-6. Honours even? 310-6 seems about par when you've won the toss and batted first, while taking six wickets is a decent effort for a team asked to bowl. Having said that, Sri Lanka's batting in the first Test gives the very strong suspicion that England are well on top.
