Ex-England pace bowler on BBC Test Match Special

"It's great to see what this place has transformed into. When I first played here there was only the scoreboard. I just hope it's not the last time we see an England team in white playing here."

    BBC Test Match Special

Before the skippers wander out to the middle, there is enough time for me to remind you that we've got this match covered from every angle.

Informative and entertaining live text? Yes. Highlights as they happen? Correct. Test Match Special? Naturally.

Aggers and co have hit the airwaves and can be found by hitting the live coverage tab at the top of this page, on 5 live sports extra or through the various BBC apps.

Even the England players, currently on the outfield warming-up, are sporting their share of woolly hats.

The toss is coming up in about five minutes. I'd bet my grandad on the winning skipper having a bowl first.

    The bare facts?

If England win this match they win the series with one match to spare (and take an 8-0 lead in the Super Series, musn't forget that).

Ben Stokes is out, Chris Woakes is in.

Alastair Cook is 20 runs short of becoming the first England batsman to 10,000 Test runs.

We are the most northerly Test venue in the world, some 5,500 miles from Colombo.

Yep, not wanting to be accused of over-generous hospitality, England have moved further north for the second Test against Sri Lanka.

Quite frankly, it looks grey and cold in Chester-le-Street, where spectators are comfortably outnumbered by empty seats.

It was Leeds indie-rockers The Music that recorded the album Welcome to the North. They should put that on in the Sri Lanka dressing room this morning.
