"The first session was even stevens, second session undoubtedly England's. Alastair Cook will be very happy with his side's score, Nick Compton will be devastated, and Alex Hales will be frustrated at missing a hundred again."

    Eng 200-3

Eranga has toiled today, but he very nearly gets his first breakthrough when he gets one to shape away and just defeat the outside edge of James Vince. That will be tea - another good session for England, with Joe Root looking very assured and James Vince making a promising start.

"Root's looking busy, trying to pinch singles and put the fielders under pressure."

  7. Eng 199-3published at 15:39 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

Herath hasn't really posed a threat today. Root milks him through square leg for a single.

  8. Eng 198-3published at 15:36 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

Some people have all the luck. Vince, just like Compton, is surprised by a short ball and gets a top edge to a pull, but unlike Compton, there's no fielder there and he gets a four.

Lovely shot from Vince, pinging Herath all along the carpet for four. Vince is looking to keep his score ticking over and I think that's the right approach, though conditions are a bit more benign than they were in the morning when poor old Compo was batting.

Joe Root only had 23 runs in five international innings at Chester-le-Street before today. He's nearly trebled that. Ooh, Vince has a heart-in-mouth moment when Eranga gets one to drift in and he gets an outside edge that falls just short of slip.

Phewf. He's OK. It was a lovely delivery from Herath, it was drift that did for Root, but he had the presence of mind to slide his toes back into the crease just in time.

Is that why McGrath only played four Tests?
