    Hang about, though...

BBC Radio Northampton's Alex Winter gives us his final verdict:

"A pretty poor all-round performance from Northamptonshire here. They bowled waywardly on the first day and have been chasing the game since.

“The batting was marginally better in the second innings but nowhere near good enough to get back in the match.

“Essex have put in an efficient display for a huge win and their second victory of the season. Promotion challenge on?"

  14. ESSEX BEAT NORTHANTS BY AN INNINGS AND 92 RUNSpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 27 April 2016
    Breaking

    Northants 119 & 230 v Essex 441-8d

Ben Sanderson lasts just two balls before Graham Napier scatters his stumps to all parts and secures a thumping victory for Essex.

It was Ryan ten Doeschate who did the majority of the damage this morning, returning figures of 4-31.

  15. wicket

  17. ouch!

Treatment for Bairstowpublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 27 April 2016

    Warwickshire 340-6 v Yorkshire 379

It sounds like Jonny Bairstow's been in the wars, according to BBC WM's Richard Wilford:

"For the second time today Yorkshire and England wicketkeeper Bairstow requires on-field treatment to his hand.

"It has been a bit of an untidy display with the gloves today from Bairstow but he is clearly in some discomfort."

  18. rain stops play

Rain stops playpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 27 April 2016

    Durham 305-4 v Middlesex 389

If the players don't make it back on but Durham go on to win the Championship by a single point, we'll have to make sure we remember today.

Chester-le-Street is treated to just 14 balls before the players are forced back to the pavilion - but the hosts were afforded just about enough time to bring up another batting point. Every little helps.

  19. wicket

WICKET Roy (c Rogers b Leach) 19published at 13:51 British Summer Time 27 April 2016

    Surrey 463 & 109-4 v Somerset 353

And Jason Roy can come and join us up in the box, if he likes. He's caught by Chris Rogers off the bowling of Jack Leach for 19, to leave Surrey 219 ahead with six second-innings wickets remaining.

The Oval's looking just lovely this afternoon, isn't it? We're back under way at every ground other than Chelmsford.
