Now then Richard, this is outstanding. I'm not sure I can encourage cricket on a plane (because it might get you arrested), but I can certainly urge that games of cricket break out everywhere else. Whatever you're doing, see if you can get a game going. Oh yes, nice from Eranga, using the slope to shape the ball past the tall figure of Hales, keeping those three slips very interested.

Richard, somewhere: I'm trying to organize a game in the economy section, left aisle of flight UA862 from Hong Kong to San Francisco. Unfortunately the (mostly) Chinese ladies around me aren't showing much interest. I'm not sure the cabin crew are too impressed either. Any recommendations how to drum up support?

That's the best Hales has looked so far, meeting a full ball from Lakmal with a swoosh of the willow to take four through the covers. On the England balcony, Nick Compton waits, looking as comfortable as a man in the dentist's waiting room.

"It is a flat pitch and a sunny day at Lords. Fill your boots. This is a great opportunity for Alex Hales to cash in after throwing away a couple of potential hundreds."

Shaminda Eranga, bowling in this match with a report for a suspect action hanging over his head, also switches to round the wicket to Cook, who wristily nurdles off his pads for four. In the comfy seats, the Duke of Edinburgh peers through a set of binoculars and is spoken to by MCC president Matthew Fleming. What I'd give for an Extendable Ear on that conversation...

"It will be a long day for Sri Lanka if they don't get a couple of wickets with the new ball."

  7. Eng 13-0published at 11:17

Nice from the mulleted Lakmal, who finds movement up the hill to go past the tentative grope of Hales. The Notts man, formerly on the MCC staff, isn't looking as assured as his skipper, who pushes through the covers and screams for two. Saying that, Cook is also defeated outside off stump. Just a touch happening. Sri Lanka need to squeeze every drop out of that.

Apart from the out-of-action top tier of the Warner Stand, HQ looks pretty full. There are a few gaps in the Pavilion, where the members' enclosure is populated exclusively by men, pretty much all older than 60. Eranga charges towards it, shaping the ball into the pads of Cook, with the skipper clipping fine for four to reach yet another milestone...

James Hiscock: I'm for a victory for Sri Lanka, 2-1 series. When was the last time England turned an unassailable position into a whitewash?

  11. Eng 4-0published at 11:07

Suranga Lakmal sharing the new ball, Alex Hales rather surprised to be called through for a single by Cook. Lakmal round the wicket, Cook asking for the screens to be moved. For the best ground in the world, Lord's has got some pretty dodgy sightscreens. At the Pavilion End, they are some white boards on a sliding rail. Club standard. You don't see many batsmen complaining, mind.

Two slips and a gully, with Eranga looking to move the ball into Cook's pads with the aid of the slope. There's also a man at very deep short leg. At third man, there's the very odd sight of the Warner Stand being reduced to something of a building site. There's spectators in the bottom tier, but the top tier is nothing more than scaffolding. Cook away with a couple off his pads.

James Taylor: With the series already won I reckon around 300 - 3 would be about par today. Batsmen have to take chances while the sun shines.

Tom Ruzyllo: Am I right to be worried my day 4 tickets will be useless? Hoping Sri Lanka put up some resistance like last Test's 2nd innings.

Certainly no sound of it. Alastair Cook is striding to the middle, lagging behind Alex Hales. Not a jumper between this Sri Lanka team, who are delighted to see the sunshine. Cook scratches at his guard and rehearses some defensive strokes. Shaminda Eranga has the ball.

Question. Do they play Jerusalem at Lord's? I can't say I've ever heard it there. Do the MCC not dabble in that sort of thing? I'll be listening...

Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara is ringing the bell today, the one that gives the players a five-minute warning. When did celebrity bell-ringers become a thing at Lord's? You don't see them messing about with that at Headingley, do you? Some would say all the better for it too...
