TMS have been telling the tale of a fan who lost Andrew Strauss' autograph. Autograph-hunting is one of the great joys of a day at the cricket. I once encroached on to the Old Trafford outfield to get the signature of Mike Atherton (my hero). A steward tapped me on the shoulder and ordered me off. What lengths have you gone to for an autograph? Woakes finally gets one through the covers, taking Eranga for four. This is his highest Test score.

"The pitch is flat and good - it's on the slower, true side. Sri Lanka needed to strike this morning and nip England out for 330-340. But if Bairstow gets in and people accompany him, then England could get 400 and Sri Lanka are in trouble."

I'm not having the existence of wooden false teeth. Pradeep, all stubble and loose limbs, pounds in to Woakes, who whips down the slope when the ball strays on to his pads. When the strike is rotated, Bairstow plays a late-enough-to-be-posthumous cut for another boundary. England moving here, Sri Lanka desperately grabbing at thin air to stop them getting away.

Not clothes, but even more bizarre than a bow tie. George Washington had a set of wooden false teeth.

Martyn, I'm glad you've asked. Now, I can't be certain, but I think you first have to be nominated by someone with noble blood. Then, they check your bank balance for the requisite number of zeros and order you to buy a stupid blazer. After that, all you have to do is wait to turn 60 and you're in. Lakmal rides his mullet in to Bairstow, a trio of singles. England much the happier in this first hour.

Batting has looked relatively straightforward this morning. England on the drive time and time again, only placement and some decent Sri Lankan fielding preventing the boundary from being peppered. The solace for Sri Lanka? When they come to bat later today, conditions should remain favourable for willow-wielding.

Tomorrow the England football, rugby union, and cricket teams will all be playing on the same day. Has that ever happened before, and if so, how often does it happen? Also, have all three ever been on the field playing simultaneously?

  9. Eng 302-6 (Bairstow 116, Woakes 33)published at 11:28

Just going back to that fella with the wooden bow tie. What other items of clothing could be made from wood? Am I right in thinking that the very earliest versions of batting pads were wooden? Bairstow continues the game that seems to involve only him, bowler Lakmal and the fielder at point, before eventually steering to third man for three to take England past 300.

All sorts of stars in attendance at HQ. Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Trevor McDonald, Sir Michael Parkinson. Don't bother turning up unless you've been knighted. Slight leg theory field from Pradeep to Woakes, but the bowling less threatening than Winnie the Pooh on the whisky. Runs collected on the on side.

There are bottles of fizz on the front row, patrons arriving with coolbags adorned with the names of expensive restaurants and Matt Prior on the England balcony, fully suited with a brew in his hand. Bairstow, big front pad, is looking to swipe Lakmal through the covers, but, for once, the timing isn't there.

Now, this has got to go down as one of the biggest cricketing crimes against fashion. Not only is this man wearing both a bacon and egg blazer and cap, but also a bow tie that is made from wood. Yes, wood. He seems incredibly proud of his unfathomable outfit. Pradeep has switched ends, watched by Alex Hales, who is fully padded up on the boundary edge.

This is a rum do. Only one over for Pradeep, replaced by fellow bouncy-haired pacer Suranga Lakmal. A change of ends, perhaps? Bairstow, playing so well he can bat with one hand, drives on the up through the covers, causing the man at deep point to get his whites dirty. Plenty of empty seats inside HQ this morning, but applause seems to be up a notch. Friday revellers.

Left-arm spin from the Pavilion End, Rangana Herath looking to turn his tweakers up the slope. 2-45 for the squat one yesterday, he bowled with more tricks than Dynamo. Silly point in place for Woakes, who pounces on a short one to cut for four.

Dear team, I went to my first Test at Lord's yesterday as a 40th birthday present. I've been going to Test matches for nearly 30 years but never made it to Lord's before. I cannot believe how perfect an environment it is for cricket, how amazing the staff are and that the Lord's buzz really is unlike anything I've heard at any other ground. I'd urge anyone who's never been to experience it!
