Lakmal to Bairstow on 166, the second highest score by a wicketkeeper for England. George Washington painted below as if his lips were glued together. And as if he put in his hair pomade and then opened the door into the teeth of a gale.

Afternoon all, in form? Finn having a barley-mow here, stepping a long leg out to Herath's tempter and crashing him back down the ground. Herath with the build of a man who stands motionless on those slow-moving travelators they have in airport terminal corridors.

Bairstow, by contrast, looks like he's batting with a wardrobe door. Bat immaculately straight, the maker's name on full display, front elbow pointing right back down the pitch. Wonderful stuff at the home of the MCC coaching manual. A single to deep cover is all he can manage off the over, though.

"If that was given out, there would have been spinners from my era throwing up because they would have had so many of those turned down. You do want to see the ball straighten."

It's not a no-ball. There's no inside edge. All good so far for Sri Lanka... but it's missing leg stump, according to Hawk-Eye. Finn survives.

Finn goes too! Rangana pins him on the pad as he lunges forward and the umpire's finger goes up. Finn isn't so sure. We're going upstairs...

"Do England want Bairstow to have a dash or want Steven Finn to get stuck in for another 70-run partnership - tire the Sri Lankans out even more?"

  11. Eng 397-8 (Bairstow 158, Finn 1)published at 13:59 British Summer Time 10 June 2016

What will Jonny do now? With Finn for company and only Anderson to come, we might well see some hefty blows... One run and one leg bye off the over and Lakmal has 3-83.

"Broad is shaking his head as he's walking off. It's short and wide, one to flash away, but he's hit it straight to the man at gully. It's hit him in the midriff - he almost couldn't get out of the way of it."

We have a wicket! Broad the man to go, flashing again at Lakmal but finding only Kusal Mendis at gully. It went quickly and Mendis had to jump a little to take it in his midriff, but that's regulation for an international cricketer. Steven Finn comes out to join Jonny Bairstow.

"In an era when people are looking for a genuinely quick bowler, where is England's crop of out-and-out fast bowlers?"

  15. Eng 395-7 (Herath 33-6-74-3)published at 13:52 British Summer Time 10 June 2016

Herath locates Broad's outside edge but it's a very thick one, the ball keeps very low and it's not even close to a chance as the ball goes to slip's left for two more. Broad and Bairstow take turns to rotate the strike. Easy pickings.

Help yourself, Stuart. Suranga Lakmal drifts on to Broad's pads and the left-hander clips a comfortable two to the man patrolling the mid-wicket boundary. It then needs a smart stop from Kusal Mendis at point to prevent a flashing cut flying for four. England within sight of 400.

Bairstow is up and running straightaway with a single to cover. Broad - with a short leg, leg slip and slip for compant as the wily Herath seeks to add to his three wickets - collects one of his own to backward point. Normal service has been resumed.
