I reckon Herath would be happy to bowl all day and all night, meal breaks permitting. He's well and truly into his rhythm now but his radar lets him down as two byes down the leg side take England into three figures and this partnership past 50. There are eight overs remaining in the day, but I reckon we'll only get four more of those in at best.

Andy Powell: Disgraceful attempt to get through the overs we've paid top dollar to watch. Players should be fined refunds.

    Hales 39, Bairstow 32

Mathews takes himself out of the attack. Nuwan Pradeep, who removed Joe Root and James Vince in two balls earlier, is back on for a burst in the 20 minutes that remain this evening. Eeesh... almost another grubber like the one that did for Root! Bairstow just about manages to jam his bat down on it.

Lovely again from Our Jonny, opening his body up to drive Hearth again through extra cover for three. Ooooh, that's close! Hales pushes forward, Herath - now round the wicket - finds the edge but it doesn't carry to slip. He then beats the England opener with one that turns and bounces. It's getting interesting.

Mark: If batting changes are to be made then James Hildreth must be an option - consistently near top of averages for years.

Mathews is the archetypal English seamer, medium pace to the point of distinctly average. On this Lord's featherbed, he looks about as threatening as a toddler with a water pistol. Sri Lanka still playing the waiting game.

With the winter tours in mind, and given this year's form, surely Scott Borthwick has to be considered to replace Compton at 3? His batting is speaking for itself at the moment, but his leg spin could allow England to stick with four seamers in the sub-continent.

Nice - very nice - from Bairstow. Herath drifts a little straighter and Bairstow drives inside out through cover for a brace. That's the stroke of a man in decent nick.

Mathews to Bairstow. Full and straight. Dot ball. Repeat five times.... then a beauty that bounces and nips away to beat Bairstow's forward push. Close!

Bairstow dances down to work Herath for one. Hales, showing the discipline of a Buddhist monk compared his first-innings swoosh, blocks out the rest of the over.

Hallelujah! We have a boundary! It's the first since the 13th over, and comes courtesy of a Bairstow back cut off Mathews. It has taken Jonny 41 balls, but he won't care.

Why not give Moeen a go at number 3? He’s scored runs there already for Worcestershire this season and could be the new David Gower with his fluent strokeplay. He’s not an opener but is wasted at 7 or 8. It’s worth a shot?

Herath over the wicket to Hales, a short leg crouched in hope more than expectation. Hales happy to kick it away as the Sri Lankans play on his patience. Who will blink first? Stay tuned.

Bell must come back. A class player with a proven record. You don't replace quality with the next one in line if they are not obviously better. Gooch scored lots of runs in the latter part of his career. Back Bell to do the same.

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews, the broadest cricketer I think I've ever seen, decides it's time to give himself a bowl. The chap manning the speed gun has just had to check it's working at all, Mathews is so slow. He's almost bowling it backwards. One off the over.

"This match is marching on, not dissipating slowly. Sri Lanka have a small chance to win it but need wickets quickly. I'm still favouring England."

Hales, every inch the modern man with his tattoos, stubble and bulging biceps, is on the front foot again to push Suranga Lakmal for a couple of singles either side of one for Bairstow. Not quite comfortable, but it's hardly demanding for England. For all their early-evening inroads, Sri Lanka need to make something happen here.

After just seeing a claim for a recall of Ian Bell, I would like to press a recall for a player who has had to struggle a lot more. Gary Ballance was a good option at 3 and scored 4 centuries and 6 50s in only 15 matches! He has been in a good form and with age on his side over Bell, should get the recall. However further down the line after Vince is given a fair crack, Bell could come back at 5 if he can continue his form and Vince fails.
