Theo Bowyer: England's top order is a shambles... Sort it out boys!

Henry Ellison: So we still need a number 3, a number 5 and a wicketkeeper who can catch.Same old problem since KP-gate and Bell/Prior lost form.

Jay: Good to see that England aren't giving up their long held status as undisputed masters of batting collapses without a fight.

Stand down. Nothing to see here. Bairstow miscues a drive, but he keeps the ball out at least. It's about small victories for England at the moment, lead of 178 or not.

Bairstow taking his time - he won't be rushed here. Pradeep kisses the ball - or was he sniffing it? Oooooooh...

And another! Vince this time. First ball, he decides to shoulder arms to one from Pradeep that shapes back in to clip the top of off stump. England have lost three wickets for five runs in 10 deliveries and Pradeep is on a hat-trick at Lord's. Jonny Bairstow will face the hat-trick ball...

    Root b Pradeep 4 (Eng 50-2)

How on earth do you play that? Put simply, you can't. Back of a length from Pradeep, and it barely gets above Root's boot laces as it cannons into his poles. He trudges off with a mixture of a wry smile and resigned look on his face. Utterly unplayable.

Joe Root is the new man at number three - where many people would like to see him bat permanently for England. He's wearing the captain's figurative armband too, although he always bats like a man in charge anyway. I spoke too soon. Root off the mark with a far from convincing bottom-edged cut past the keeper for four. I'll keep my mouth shut.

Thanks James. So almost 31 overs remain in the day. England well on top but have we just seen the last of Nick Compton in an England shirt. The BBC inbox is bulging already...

"It was quite a good delivery. We don't like snap decisions and he has got a couple of games for Middlesex, but I'd be surprised if we see him in the next Lord's Test. He'd actually played pretty well until then."

    Compton c Chandimal b Eranga 19 (Eng 45-1)

Ah, poor Nick. That's a sad sight. He'd got a start here, but he just plays down the wrong line pushing forward at Eranga and gets a thin snick through to the keeper. He walks off shaking his head, knowing that his time as an England batsman has probably come to an end.

  15. Eng 45-0published at 16:35 British Summer Time 11 June 2016

Good sharp running from these two. Compton blocks into the leg side and they scamper a single.

That's the stuff, Compo! Beautiful pull off Eranga, getting right on top of the bounce and rolling his wrists on it. Good start by England here...

"What is the number that keeps Compton in the side? I think has to be in excess of 50. If he gets significant runs, then I don't see how he doesn't play in the next Test. But he has to get them."

Compton times Pradeep nicely through the covers and picks up four.
