How on earth do you play that? Put simply, you can't. Back of a length from Pradeep, and it barely gets above Root's boot laces as it cannons into his poles. He trudges off with a mixture of a wry smile and resigned look on his face. Utterly unplayable.
Joe Root is the new man at number three - where many people would like to see him bat permanently for England. He's wearing the captain's figurative armband too, although he always bats like a man in charge anyway. I spoke too soon. Root off the mark with a far from convincing bottom-edged cut past the keeper for four. I'll keep my mouth shut.

Ah, poor Nick. That's a sad sight. He'd got a start here, but he just plays down the wrong line pushing forward at Eranga and gets a thin snick through to the keeper. He walks off shaking his head, knowing that his time as an England batsman has probably come to an end.
Good sharp running from these two. Compton blocks into the leg side and they scamper a single.

"What is the number that keeps Compton in the side? I think has to be in excess of 50. If he gets significant runs, then I don't see how he doesn't play in the next Test. But he has to get them."
