It's out. Wonderful leg-spin. A little drift, then some spin up the slope. Ballance didn't get his bat out in front of his pad. The Joe Root dismissal gave Yasir confidence. England were dominating.

    Ballance lbw b Yasir 6 (Eng 147-4)

Oh yes, Yasir! Straighter than one of those arrow thingys from the spinner, and Ballance is trapped plumb as he tries to defend forward. Bit of a chat with Cook about whether or not to review but that was clear as anything.

Right, we're back with Wahab and his red-lined shoes - on another day, an excellent title for a children's book - but Ballance is undistracted and cracks a four through square leg.

I also feel this England innings is starting to mirror Pakistan's a bit. Captain taking the lead, as his colleagues try to bat around him? Thankfully, for England, the line-up bats deep, with Bairstow and Moeen Ali, among others, to come.

So Pakistan make two breakthroughs in this second session, both coming from Yasir's spin. All that talk of left-arm seamers being key and a right-arm leg-spinner brings the visitors back into the game. Funny old game, this cricket.

Gary Ballance is the new man for England.

The ball before he played a lovely shot down the slope, thought he would do it again, but this was quicker and flatter. Vince looks suited to this level, but he's yet to get that score by his name. There's plenty of players who look the part but who haven't got the runs. You won't get a long career in Test cricket if you don't make the opportunities count.

    Vince lbw b Yasir 16 (Eng 139-3)

Well, it was umpire's call in the end, the ball clipping leg stump. On first glance it had looked a good shout for Pakistan. Yasir gets the ball to come back, Vince had a decent chat with Cook before going for the review. But it wasn't to be.

Yasir gets one to slightly nip back towards Vince's front pad. Umpire gives it out. We go upstairs...

What's that, a bouncer you say Henry? Well, here you go. Wahab packs the off side field for his seventh over before sending a bouncer at Vince. Game seems to have slowed down since that last wicket though. Them wines taking effect in the crowd as well, gone very quiet.

The battle is on, a battle of skills. It's fascinating, like a game of chess - when will the bouncer come?

Took a great catch off my own bowling in our midweek cricket game this week. Put in a good dive to scoop the ball up off the deck. An opposition spectator was heard to say: “with a catch like that he’s clearly not as old as he looks”. I’ll take that!

Wahab Riaz returns for a spell. Pakistan chopping and changing with their bowlers. Not much trouble, and I can see there wasn't much trouble for you getting Dwayne Levrock into your best slip fielder suggestions. I have a colleague who says he can give him a run for his money, if only he'd been eligible to play for Bermuda of course.

Joe Root took on the left-armers by hitting straight and through the on-side. James Vince already looks to be keen to go through the off side.

Yasir trying to turn on the heat a bit. He's got two slips and a short-leg but Cook and Vince see this out in relative comfort. Spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed watches on from the Lord's balcony as Yasir gives away one from the over. And both Yasir and Mushy would have enjoyed watching Root fall prey to the turn. If you fancy replaying that moment, have a look below.

That was a regal way to get off the mark from James Vince - the weight, balance and stride were magnificent. The shot of the day.

So England, as Ramiz rightly says, must regroup. Pakistan have waited a long while for this wicket, just a slight shame it wasn't Amir that made the breakthrough. I feel for the guy. Still, he's running in hard again, slip cordon remains three-strong with a wide gully thrown in as well.

James Vince, by the way, is the new man and the right-hander greets Amir's wide delivery with a super shot through cover for four.

Root's face crumpled as he hit that shot. He knew what he'd done. He's cross with himself, just running away back to the dressing room.

    Root c Hafeez b Yasir 48 (Eng 118-2)

Oh dear! Joe Root does the unthinkable and lofts Yasir Shah way, way high, and eventually into the grateful hands of Hafeez. Caught the top edge I think and he lets out a cry of frustration on his walk back.
