It's a straight-on ball. Shane Warne would tell you it's a variety ball, but it's not - it doesn't turn and just runs on to the batsman quickly. It comes back to the fact they are not picking him. If you can't pick him, he becomes a match-winning bowler.

    Bairstow b Yasir 29 (Eng 193-6)

Bowled him! Yasir Shah is spinning a web and Jonny Bairstow is the latest to get tangled. This has got shades of Shane Warne befuddling Alec Stewart, as Bairstow goes back to one that he thinks is there to cut. Instead, it scuttles on, quick and straight, underneath the bat and on to off stump. England really in the mire.

The pacy Wahab is round the wicket to Bairstow, who plays a pretty awful waft outside the off stump. Jonny B grins, but if he'd got a nick on that Trevor Bayliss would have booted him all around the dressing room. Hello! What's this? Thomas the pigeon is back! He's strolling about at extra cover. Where've you been, old boy?

Alan Baird: Knowing what to leave is as important as knowing what to play. England's captain out again to a ball he needn't have played at.

Alex Pitt: Boycott praising Bairstow for always playing shots - he used to slaughter KP all the time for doing the same.

Change of bowling. Big old conflab between four in green caps. Amir off, Wahab Riaz on. Amir, after two drops, finally got Alastair Cook.

That shot was so out of character from Joe Root. You give a bowling attack like Pakistan any hint of lint, because they will rush through it. When you're in, you have to stay in.

So, Friday evening. Is it as wet with you as it is through my window? What are you up to? What's your cricketing Friday? Following on the commute? Pub later? Still the bouncy figure of Yasir Shah - he might bowl all night. Moeen, best beard on either side, almost bamboozled by a skidder.

Lower order players like Moeen Ali, even Jonny Bairstow, shouldn't play like top-order batsmen - they should just play their own way. Jonny will never die wondering, he's at the period in his life where he is more mature. He knows this is the way he plays, and he'll live or die by it. I used to love batting with Alan Knott - he'd come in and play shot.

Floodlights on at Lord's, Mohammad Amir charging down the slope. Feels every inch a time to be bowling. Jonny Bairstow, bat raised like a weapon, will look to reverse the momentum, and belts a half-volley through the covers for four. One more here and the tourists will be right among England, long batting line-up or no long batting line-up.

This scorecard so far is almost a perfect summary of England's batting in the past couple of years.

Afternoon, Stephan Shemilt in the chair. Just in case you were thinking England would have it all their own way in this series, a flaky middle order has been Yasir Shah'd. I've just heard someone say this game is evenly balanced. I disagree. Pakistan have England by the soft bits.

Why did it take Pakistan so long to bowl full and wide to Cook? They couldn't stop themselves trying to bowl him out, getting too straight and giving him runs off his hips.

  15. Eng 176-5 (Amir 13-2-49-1)published at 16:35 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Amir is all fire and aggression now. Plenty of sweat on his face, he's looking like a man on a mission. That ball to get Cook swung just enough to tease the skipper. He then treats Bairstow to a bouncer to help round up the over.

Howard Horner: Always sad to see Cook go, but I am absolutely made up for Mohammad Amir there. Totally deserved that wicket, what a bowler!

Philip Roberts: How dare Amir celebrate like that!! He's nothing but a cheat. His ban was a joke it should have been life

Is this a good piece of bowling? Amir dragged Cook wide, wide, wide. Cook was in two minds. He was leave, leave, leave, and was maybe trying to get bat on ball. It looked like a half-volley and he dragged it on. That's a big wicket.

    Cook b Amir 81 (Eng 173-5)

Why rely on other people when you can get the job done yourself? Amir gets Cook reaching for a wide delivery and the England skipper drags it on to his stumps. Job. Done.

Is this about the time that the wines and beer really start to take effect? What's the Lord's policy on beer snakes? I once had a such a creature spill part of its contents on me at an England-India Test. Probably summed up the day as India had been 8-4 at one point. Yasir makes it back-to-back maidens for Pakistan.

  20. Eng 173-4published at 16:27 British Summer Time 15 July 2016

Amir instantly into the attack for Pakistan. He's doing well to keep the cheer going for a man who's had two catches dropped of his bowling. Anyway, he runs in from a wider angle, but with that same whip action. A maiden.
