The cabbage leaf idea (12:27) may not be a complete windup. Transpiration (and evaporation) absorbs heat from the surrounding air, making it significantly cooler. Hence sitting under a tree is noticeably cooler than sitting under an umbrella. However, whether a single cabbage leaf transpires sufficiently to induce a notable cooling effect is questionable. A wet cabbage leaf would certainly be better....

Pakistan will be round about at 270, 280 on. That's quite a bit to be bowling with. If they're not out at the close play, you can add more to that tomorrow. It will be a really good game to win.

But Shan Masood and Azhar Ali have seen Pakistan to lunch and a lead of 107. England need wickets this afternoon, or they game could be gone.

Quick wickets needed, with Stuart Broad duly obliging.

We've had a good morning. The ball has dominated the bat. England bowled with intensity when they had to. Woakes looked comfortable with the bat. Pakistan will be thrilled with their bowling. And when England came out to bowl it was good, lots of movement and bounce. Great entertainment for the crowd.

  10. Lunch - Pak 40-1published at 13:02

And that's lunch, ending what has been Pakistan's session. They mopped up the England tail, then pushed their lead past 100 for the loss of only Mohammad Hafeez. England have much to ponder over their steak with peppercorn sauce.

That might have been through sheer lust for a wicket. Jonny Bairstow was particularly convinced, unable to fathom why it was not given. No bat, Azhar survives.

I can't see from here. Umpire's given it not out. There's got to be a clear decision that he's nicked it.

Is this a bit desperate from England? To be fair, it was a loud appeal. Azhar Ali caught at short leg?

Woakes with what will be the penultimate over before lunch. Din from the crowd definitely dimmed, patrons already off to the Nursery End for a champagne lunch. Azhar finally gets the scoreboard moving with a clip to fine leg. All very sedate.

It was a nice tidy over from Moeen. There's always going to be something around off stump to left-handers. The bowlers get away with it one or two times when they get the studs on the pitch and it loosens the surface a bit.

Round the wicket to Masood, the slope helping the direction of his off-breaks, slip and short leg in place. Sun behind a cloud, Moeen on the money, Masood happy to defend. Bowling to Masood is plenty easier than the sweeping of Misbah-ul-Haq. There's been no run for more than three overs.

Moeen Ali didn't have a happy time in the first innings. He was taken apart by the Pakistan captain. He was bowling then from the Nursery End, now he's coming from the Pavilion End.

Moeen Ali. England need him to be much, much better than the first innings.
