When you've got a lead of 74, it doesn't take too long for opposing teams to feel down about themselves. You can just hit about and slowly it gets to 120. England have had the perfect start with Hafeez, and that's what Pakistan can't afford to do, is give away gifts.

  2. Pak 7-1 (lead by 74)published at 12:05

You just get the feeling that things could happen in this hour before lunch. England know this is where the game could be won and lost, and the Pakistan batting sometimes has all the solidity of a poppadom. Masood gets an inside edge on to to his pad, the ball just looping over Gary Ballance at short leg. While the left-hander looks uncertain, Azhar gets off the mark with a lovely drive through mid-off.

Sahil Oberoi: I'm pretty sure Hafeez is the worst cricketer to play at Lords, ever.

Kevin Ticehurst: If this isn't the time for a Stuart Broad masterpiece. I do not know what is!

  4. Pak 2-1 (Broad 2-1-1-1)published at 12:01

Yep, it was pretty brainless from Hafeez, who tried to push a bull through the eye of a needle and only succeeded in giving catching practice. Azhar Ali the new man, not being sucked into Broad's wide-of-off-stump line. Very nice applause at the end of Broad's over.

Why would you want to guide a ball when there's three slips and a gully. It was a badly constructed shot in the end. What was he thinking? He hasn't looked comfortable. It will be like that for him in the series. He's been rather inconsistent in conditions outside of Pakistan.

    Hafeez c Root b Broad 0 (Pak 2-1)

That's what England needed! Stuart Broad strikes, albeit with the help of Mohammad Hafeez's limp bat. A wide, innocuous delivery, Hafeez unable to resist dangling the fishing rod. Nothing shot, edged to second slip, where Joe Root takes it in front of his throat. Door open, England need to barge through.

Damien B: My cricketing Saturday is finding out we have 10 players and while playing find out our 4s got skittled for 33 again.

    Damian Dixon: Umpiring and beer!

Surely not at the same time, Damian?

  8. Pak 1-0published at 11:55

Debutant Jake Ball, rather than six-wicket man Chris Woakes, shares the new ball. To emphasise the task ahead of England in the rest of this match, only once has a side chased more than 282 to win a Test at Lord's. Any more than 220 in this Pakistan second innings and they are really up against it.

When you look at a player you want to give him the benefit of the doubt. You want to think he'll get you the runs, but I don't see that in Shan Masood. He's got to iron out a few areas in his batting.

  10. Pak 1-0published at 11:52

Close! Shan Masood, the man who has lived in London and went to university in Durham, almost goes in the first over. No feet, edge, falls short of the slip fielders. If you're just switching on and are wondering why Pakistan are batting, this is what you've missed...

Jimbo: Healthy lead for Pakistan and England will have to face Shah on days 4/5. Sanguine I am not.

Bowser: Pretty feeble batting from England, I said they'd collapse to 175, only a hundred out!

Anthony Farmer: My cricketing Saturday is ....over

Right then, the players are back out there. Shan Masood and Mohammad Hafeez will open the batting for Pakistan, Stuart Broad is at the end of his run. England need a good day with the ball, or they will be out of this match.

An outstanding story. If you've got your own tale of a time when you mixed the identities of a cricketer, or simply not recognised one, then do let me know. The more embarrassing, the better.

Bit embarrassing - just asked my 'other half' Sue to get Phil Tufnell's autograph, which she did. Only problem - it was Graham Gooch's! Oh well, have to get the 'great man's' another time.

So England lost their last three wickets for 12 runs and added only 19 runs in total this morning. On a batting day at HQ, Pakistan have a real chance to bat the home side out of this one. Even if the tourists only make 220 or so, England will still face a challenge. Over to you, bowlers. Something special needed.

Pakistan are traditionally a very good bowling side. This 67 will add a lot of meat to the score in the second innings. There is less pressure on batsmen and that's a massive advantage. It's still a very good batting pitch. All you have to do is apply yourself, see out the new ball.

Ball run out 4 (Eng 272)

Hmmmm. I can what England were trying to do here, but it's pretty daft. Looking for the second to keep Chris Woakes on strike, Jake Ball is miles short at the non-striker's end. A waste. England all out for 272, trailing by 67. In the context of the match, that is sizable.

  20. Eng 271-9 (trail by 68)published at 11:35

England had no reviews, but Finn was beyond redemption. It was hitting the leg stump. Jake Ball the new man, slicing his second ball in Test cricket behind square for four. I've never seen Ball bat before, but he looks like a number 11 who gets on with it. The new ball is due after the next over, but I'm not sure Pakistan will bother.
