Amir, who I think is the only pacer not to get a warning for running on the pitch, is over the wicket, but then switches to round as Steven Finn chats to Alastair Cook on the England balcony. Bairstow on 48, but isn't tempted by one dangled outside the off pole.

This match has single-handedly got me back into Test cricket. What a cracker.

England do know there's another day after this one? Not sure what the point of this is?

England have survived the trial by Wahab, Mohammad Amir returns to a handful of boos. It's deliciously poised for him to strike a telling blow on his return.

This is normally the applause you get for a run-a-ball 50, not a 99-left-to-win.

Slowly, slowly, catchy monkey. If the slowness is directly linked to the standard of monkey, then England's has roller skates, dungarees and a cigarette in his mouth. Massive, massive cheer when the runs required gets down into double figures. Even Yasir Shah asks for more noise from the crowd. Woakes, England's Midas, still defending. He survived this review not long back.

This is fabulous Test match cricket. Quality reverse swing, leg-spin and this dogged defence from Woakes and Bairstow. They've been lucky also. They've not thrown it away, they're fighting it out.

It's been an outstanding Test, it really has. It might now be edging towards the finale it deserves. Still Wahab, still three slips crouch for the edge that refuses to come. There are 21 overs left in the day, 29 if either side takes the extra half hour. Start thinking about how you're going to get out of work/school tomorrow.

In Tests, the more you can make the bowler bowl, it will make him tired. Yasir could be tiring. Test cricket does funny things to you doesn't it?

Finally, finally England get a loose ball, with Bairstow pouncing like a lion on a zebra. Long hop from Yasir, pulled for four. Release at Lord's, the relief pouring out as if someone has just taken the lid off the ground. Are England getting through? Light at the end of the tunnel?

We've some quality this week, and this spell is right up there with it all. I can't believe these two are still there against this.

  11. Eng 174-6 (Wahab 12-1-43-1)published at 16:57

The way Wahab is going, he might have to bowl a football, just to see if England can hit that. High pace - 89mph, reverse hoop that darts away from this pair of right-handers at the last split second. England missing more than they are hitting. Just surviving the over is a cause for celebration. Surely a wicket is coming? Wahab can't keep going, can he?

I think Misbah will start to get worried if these two are still together in 40 runs' time.

Every run is being roared as if it's the winner now. After that huge appeal, Woakes is lauded for a mere single through the off side. The way this is going, we're coming back tomorrow. You wouldn't have thought that at lunch-time.

Pakistan convinced here, Sarfraz almost exploding in his appeal for caught behind off a sweeping Woakes. Yasir the bowler.

Wahab is like a left-handed Waqar - he's got a classical, whippy action which is well suited to reverse swing.
