Mohammad Amir appears to be warming up. I was wondering earlier how long before Pakistan turn to their only wicket-taker of the day again.

Wahab, the sweat starting to build on his forehead, stays in the late-80s on the speed gun. Cook gets a few runs while Root holds firm.

David Hill: We used to play pub cricket when the kids were small. As driver I could decide if we passed the Coach and Horses. Worth 16 runs.

Karl Bates Radio: Pub cricket in the car, just keep driving by British Legions, you could declare by lunch.

    Cook 67, Root 56

It is, as they say, swings and roundabouts. Cook was initially overtaken by Root in the individual scoring. Root got to his half-century first, as we saw. But thanks to the captain's "politeness" he's now gone past Root. It's kind of like what I experience on the M62 every day into work really. Lot less polite there though.

Joe Root has converted only one of his last eight fifties into centuries. Alastair Cook has converted only one of his last 10.

    Wahab 7-1-22-0

Wahab gets two slips and what appears to be a point-ish fielder. Call it a really-wide-gully. I mean, let's face it, point doesn't really mean point at Old Trafford does it? Pakistan being made to work hard now, as Wahab starts with a no-ball and then a few wide of off stump. Cook's been eating them up for breakfast, lunch and second lunch.

It was a genuine edge. He's been saving that ball as a surprise and it found the edge. It was wide of slip and ran to the boundary.

Salt. Wounds. On the rare chance that the ball finds Cook's edge, it goes just wide of Younus Khan at slip, and then totters off to third man for four with a fielder huffing and puffing behind it. It was a good delivery from Yasir, it got Cook forward and nicked the edge. A flailing dive from Younus may just have got fingers on it, and from then on who knows?

A few sections of the crowd are raising their voices/chants as Rahat, visibly tiring I think, grunts in. He bowls a couple of wide deliveries, the second of which is rightly given as wide. Mohammad Hafeez does a good job to stop a strong Root drive in the circle.

Viewing figures rise for the balcony at the Point building. I once saw Peter Reid there (from way, way out, of course).

Sarah Watson: We gave up on count the limbs pub cricket in the car when our Nan saw a pub called The Army and the Navy.

Graham Wright: Pub cricket - Fox and the Hounds and you're quids in, although always arguments over the number of hounds.

    Yasir 11-3-31-0

Yasir trying to stay on the attack with a slip, leg slip and a short leg to Cook. But he kind of spoils that I feel by bowling two really wide deliveries on the leg side. Wicketkeeper Sarfraz had his twinkle toes at the ready to grab them though. A maiden over.

Just looking at that Cook graphic by the way, and seen a gap between long on and mid-wicket-ish. A weak area?

  12. Eng 123-1published at 14:17 British Summer Time 22 July 2016

"Polite push" is probably a very accurate way of describing Cook's shots. Sort of the oh-terribly-sorry-I-appear-to-have-scored-runs-off-you-are-you-alright effort. There's a gentle murmur around Old Trafford, as Cook strokes Rahat through cover for three.

Once again it's a caress. It's a solid, polite push through the off side.

    That's Alastair Cook's 50th Test fifty - to go with 28 centuries.

    Eng 119-1 (Cook 52, Root 52)

Almost inevitably, Cook makes it to 50 as well. Another push down the ground gets him a boundary, it was a fuller delivery from Yasir. Crowd getting a bit louder now that these batsmen have settled into their groove again. Cook's innings has been chanceless for most of it and he raises his bat a la Root to acknowledge the applause.

Pub cricket, David? An excellent suggestion. I was once taught 'pub golf' by a friend, although we should probably leave that for a separate discussion. Suffice to say the score was forgotten by the end.

Anyway, Misbah tries to shuffle his fielders around for this Rahat over which yields just one. There's a man with a lion's head on in the stands, mane flowing beautifully in the wind. Well played Sir. Good luck drinking that beer as well.

    Root 52, Cook 45

Root's forward defence looks impeccable. He grinds a few off Yasir in this over. Each time he pauses on one knee for those few seconds extra, like a medieval warrior bowing in front of the king before going to battle. Then sword up, and off we go.
