Yorkshire's Adam Lyth has been out four times in the County Championship this season before 11 o'clock. Is the batsman within his rights to insist that play doesn't start until 11. Andy Peters
John Holder: "If you're on the pitch early, the umpires will say to both teams, 'We're early, are you happy to start?' Then you get on with it."

He was joined by Joe Root, who has been a one-man highlight reel for his 41.

Skipper Alastair Cook, who arguably completed his biggest task of the morning by winning the toss, has been present throughout, steadily making his way to 40.

I umpired a game last night and during the game a bowler bowled a very high full toss, was called no-ball, the batsman played the ball down to fine leg but hit his stumps in the process. What should have been the correct ruling please? Would he be out? And can they score after wickets have been hit? Andrew Cunningham, manager of Farnham CC Under-11s
Former umpire John Holder: "He can't be out because no-ball has been called. The ball is still live so runs can be scored."
There's been just the one wicket to fall this morning, Alex Hales having his furniture rearranged by a rozzer from Mohammad Amir.

Tom Audsley: I have a question, would Mr Holder be able to umpire for us tomorrow afternoon? Malton Cricket Club, 1:30pm start.

Don't forget that umpire John Holder will be taking your questions on TMS during the lunch break. We'll bring the best of what he has to say right here. I might even bring you up to speed on the best of the action from the morning session. Generous.

Root has looked in tremendous touch all summer but doesn't have the runs to show for it. Those back foot shots are tremendous. But as far as he's concerned, it's just the start.
... and he's succeeded. The bails are removed, the players head off for lunch. England's morning, all starting with them winning the toss. The ball isn't doing a great deal and Pakistan have bowled a touch short. It's a time to be batting.

Yasir has been too straight to Cook, who again works off his pads for an easy-as-you-like single. Bread and butter. Full bunger bunted through mid-wicket by Root. More chants, the odd song, Yasir with hands on hips and needing a pat on the back from Misbah. Root's trying to make this the last over....

Chris Marsh: Any tips on how to explain to my wife that I'm not just sitting in the sun drinking beer, I'm watching the cricket too?

You've got to be careful against Amir because he's swinging it in. He's been the best bowler for Pakistan so far today.
Amir comes round the wicket to Root, who has done almost all of the scoring in the past half hour or so. A clip past mid-on, a chase for Wahab Riaz, the pace bowler must be delighted to diving on the mid-wicket fence. One, maybe two overs to go before lunch.

The batsmen look to be in a good frame of mind, because they've not missed out on any loose deliveries. You respect the talent of Yasir but you keep the runs flowing with singles, twos and boundaries.
Cook 38, Root 33
Yasir switches ends in the hunt for a change of fortune, but repeats his short stuff of earlier to be whipped through the on-side by the increasingly impressive Root. More howls of "Roooooot" around OT, a Test match the only time a Yorkshireman is given a warm welcome in these parts.

It's been a very impressive partnership. There's some great defence from Cook, and some great shots from both batsmen. It's forcing Pakistan to bowl to their strengths. I can also see the batsmen are concentrating very hard. At Lord's it felt they were very good for 20 or 30 overs and then lost the plot.
