It's good batting from Hafeez. He played the first few overs diligently. Now he looks at ease. It happens when you see off a tough period and the opportunities will come your way. The ball will come on and it will get softer as well.

Rakesh Pradhan: This has shades of when India toured here. Won at Lord's then got destroyed in each Test.

Ben Wire: The way we're playing needs a soundtrack: March of the Valkyries or something equally as relentless and unforgiving.

England need eight wickets to win

Last over before lunch and Ben Stokes continues to bowl the odd ripper to the right-hander. Younus keeps his frenetic scoring going with a glance off the pads for two.

And that's that. Time for some refreshments.

This was expected. Pakistan are looking for relief and it has come in the form of the off-spinner. But they have to be careful as it also brings opportunities for getting out.

Alastair Cook is so predictable sometimes. He gives his spinner Moeen Ali an over before lunch. Textbook.

Younus, who had looked all at sea against the seamers, gets to the pitch of the ball and drives four through the covers. Hafeez does the same with a full toss.

That was a good delivery, it got big on Younus Khan, but it went in and went out - Cook messing it up.

Younus needs to spend time at the crease, it's imperative for him in order to get into gear. Hafeez is also not in good touch. If Hafeez had runs he could have shielded Younus.

Groans envelop Old Trafford when Younus edges Ben Stokes straight to the skipper at first slip and Alastair Cook spills it. He almost pushed it out of his own hands there. It was in, then out. Stokes covers his face in frustration.

England should note that Younus Khan once batted for more than 12 hours in making 313 against Sri Lanka in Karachi in 2009.

His longest knock in England is almost seven hours, when he hit 173 at Headingley in 2006. I was at that game and, if memory serves me right, he was run out by Inzamam - who then fell on his own stumps later on.

Younus is off the mark with a horrible poke through wide mid-off which brings three.

The last time I saw queues snaking around Old Trafford on the Monday of a Test, I was one of the 20,000 locked out of the final day of the 2005 Ashes Test.

A bit different today as there are vast swathes of empty seats... but still a 45-minute wait to buy a ticket. Volunteer stewards were having to apologise to frustrated fans. Apparently they didn't anticipate so many people turning up on the day without tickets - which, given the state of the match with England pressing for victory, is a little surprising.

    Hafeez 20, Younus 0

Now England have three quality seam bowlers - with Chris Woakes perfectly backing up Anderson and Broad - Ben Stokes can be England's enforcer. Short, quick spells to unsettle the batsmen.

He roughed up Pakistan in the first innings, and he's bowling quickly here. When he gets it wrong, however, Mohammad Hafeez carts him through the off side for four.

Dear old Younus, he sort of goes into a disco dance routine when he brings his right leg around.

    Anderson 6-1-10-2

By my calucations, Younus Khan has faced almost 18,000 deliveries in Test cricket but he can't have seen many better than the first ball he gets from Jimmy Anderson here.

The ball is on a length and it almost chops the batsman in half as it zips off the pitch and swings sharply away. Maiden over.

Did that ball keep just a shade low? It was the inswinging delivery and Azhar Ali was covering the stumps. It must have been close for the umpire to call it.

    Azhar lbw b Anderson 8 (Pak 25-2)

Azhar Ali has been stitched up like a kipper.

James Anderson drags the batsman across with some nice outswingers, then nips one back into the right-hander's pads.

That was plumb. He doesn't even both reviewing it.

Shan Masood was a sitting duck, wasn't he? He didn't show any reaction when he was caught in the slips. What's disappointing is he didn't have a plan, like maybe standing outside the crease. There was nothing to suggest he's got a plan.

    Hafeez 16, Azhar 8

Plenty of pace and carry for Stuart Broad - the bowler firing one down the leg side which Mohammad Hafeez briefly threatens to chase. The wicketkeeper takes the ball at neck-height. Good pitch, this.

James Anderson is forensically examining Azhar Ali's technique. When he pitches one up, however, looking for a little extra swing, the batsman drives two back past him.

Here's Jimmy taking England's first wicket of the day. Shan Masood must be sick of the sight of the Lanky lad.
