Imagine England still need a few wickets tomorrow afternoon and they have to go off for rain. Alastair Cook will feel a tad twitchy.

But it won't get that far.

    Will it?

    Weather forecast

BBC Weather's Sarah Keith-Lucas: "There's still some brightness at Old Trafford but there's the potential to see some showers this afternoon - fairly light and drizzly. Temperatures today are 19C or so. We're certainly not going to see a washout.

"Tomorrow looks fairly similar to today - we'll start off on a dry note but by the afternoon we could see some rain. Those showers should move through relatively quickly."

Arthur Goddard: OK Alastair – game plan. Nudge a single off your pads first ball; get your 50; declare; belatedly get into Pakistan.

Cook did, however, find an ally in Cricinfo's senior correspondent George Dobell. He made the valid point that Cook's captaincy mirrors his batting style - a style which has seen him score more Test runs than any other Englishman.

Dobell wrote: "Wasn't this decision entirely typical of the most pragmatic batsman England have ever produced? A man who has denied himself the cover drive for months at a time in a bid to cut out risk and give himself the best chance of accumulating the runs required to help his side into strong positions.

"A man who has built a magnificent career on a pull, a nudge and a cut. A man in whom the victory for substance over style is overwhelming."

Speaking to the press pack last night, England assistant coach Paul Farbrace said it was a "pretty simple decision" not to enforce the follow-on.

"We wanted to get our runs while it's still a very good pitch, at no point putting ourselves under undue pressure, trying to chase a score," he said. "The pitch will deteriorate.

"We've got two days to bowl them out, we can bat on in the morning and get a few more then look to put them under extreme pressure."

I can't let it go about the follow-on - I'm still grumpy. England have to bat again this morning to take the game completely away from Pakistan. But with the conditions the way they are, they need to get the ball in hand. Pakistan have been given that lifeline.

Skipper Cook is just one run away from his 50th Test fifty, and is joined by Joe Root on 23 not out. Prepare for plenty of early-morning urgency.

It was a farce, in some respects - let's be honest.

England's batsmen were on and off more times than a celebrity relationship.

The weather shouldn't be a problem today, however. England will resume their second innings on 98-1, 489 runs in the lead.

Who'd have thought one man's decision not to follow-on could provoke such a reaction?

Judging by the reaction of some on social media, you'd have thought Alastair Cook had broken into their house in the dead of night looking for rare Pokemon.

Instead, he just fancied having a bat.
