    Sohail 15-3-57-4

Seeing that Bairstow had a brief chat with the umpire as he walked back after his wicket. Suggestions that he maybe thought it was a no-ball but replays show Sohail was spot-on. Moeen Ali is the new man, and Sohail treats him to a couple of straight deliveries including one from round the wicket.

What a great selection by Pakistan. It's the bounce - Bairstow goes forward, it takes off, so he tries to cut and he edges. It's a misjudgment of length and extra bounce. Whoever had a hand in the selection of Sohail has made a great decision.

    Bairstow c Sarfraz b Sohail 12 (Eng 158-5)

From Bond hero to zero. Bairstow slashes at a rising delivery from Sohail and is caught behind. It was a touch closer to his body than he was perhaps expecting, and he top edged it back. England's top half back in the hut.

Comparing cricketers to Bond movies sounds like a fun way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. Bairstow, similar to the those on HM Secret Service, lives life on the edge by striding out to Yasir's length delivery and beautifully smokes it down the ground. He gets a four but it was another way to break the shackles for England.

Alphonse Rawlinson: Vince, rather like the Bond film Spectre, a lot of style, grips you for a bit, but at the end you wonder what it was all for.

It looks like the sun has sort of retreated at Edgbaston (it's definitely retreated here at BBC towers). Will England retreat into a shell? Bairstow seems to disagree somewhat. He cracks one through the off side off a wide delivery from Sohail. It beats Aslam in the circle and looks good for four, until a fielder claws it back right at the end. Still gets three and a minor bit of relief for the hosts.

Arslan Tahir: Pakistan made a big mistake by playing three left-arm pacers in previous Tests. Sohail is a fantastic bowler.

    Ballance 37, Bairstow 3

As the lead man for Pink Floyd once sang "where do we go from here?". England have another recovery job on their hands, after that 69-run stand between Vince and Ballance ended. Yasir Shah tries again to get the batsmen playing forward, but ends up with a full toss to Ballance. Batsman can't capitalise though which is a shame as it would have been a good relief shot.

On the wicket, the gentleman that is Younus gave an honest self-assessment after taking the catch, wasn't really sure if it carried. But the replays justified Pakistan's early celebrations. New man Jonny Bairstow gets off the mark with a clipped single on the leg side.

It's the same old story, he looks so convincing, but only for a little while. He's got to make sure his stay at the crease is a lot longer, because he's a better batsman than getting 30s and 40s. If he wants to improve, he has to better with the balls in the corridor.

    Vince c Younus b Sohail 39 (Pak 144-4)

What a catch by Younus at second slip, dives to his left to scoop it off the ground. It needed an umpire's review but his fingers were clearly under the ball. Sohail gets the breakthrough. He grunted in like a tennis player in the championship clash at Wimbledon and bowls it short with lots of ferocity. Vince tries to kind of play and miss at it, ended up getting bat on it. Younus did the rest, and how!

Vince is caught at second slip by Younus. But did it carry? The umpires want another look...

Yasir, to shouts of "lage raho" (keep at it) from his keeper, keeps a slip and a short leg to Ballance and bowls a very tidy over - a maiden in fact. Mostly length deliveries as he tries to get Ballance playing forward, the left-hander strides out and provides solid defence.

Pakistan haven't bowled a bouncer. There hasn't been a duck and there hasn't been a pull shot.

Plenty of you getting in touch about Geraint Jones' Pokemon habits. I had to Google what exactly constitutes "capturing" a Pokemon character as I'm blissfully unaware of the ins and outs of this trend. But there you go, whatever keeps our cricketers happy. And back-to-back maidens. Yasir does a good job of this over after his first one went for fours. Vince sees this one out and a couple of the groundsmen seem to be having a post-lunch snooze.
