Speaking of the gym, Ballance must do some good work on his calves as a massive stride out to Yasir gives the left-hander a boundary through the cover area. Good shot to a ball just over length, bat facing down and then flowing through the drive. England continuing this approach of breaking down Pakistan bit by bit followed by the odd flurry.

    Rahat Ali looks cream-crackered already.

More solid defence from Moeen, after Ballance gets three runs off Rahat. The bowler looks like he wants to fire down all of his 50 daily press-ups in one delivery. Moeen keeps the straightest of bats to see out the over.

Right, after the minor doldrums of the afternoon session in the crowd, I can hear plenty of cheers. Which probably means the beer and food are starting to build a century stand of their own inside everyone. How long before the "snakes" are picked up?

Moeen gets a single to start the Yasir over before England shut up shop.

Still windy conditions at Edgbaston as Ballance sees out a Rahat Ali over. I've been watching his stance from just on leg stump, as he then shifts across when the ball is released. Text-book guard? Certainly helps him keep his off stump in mind when playing Rahat. There's a minor shout for lbw when Rahat gets the ball to nip in. There's a noise of some sort but umpire says no.

Joe Giacomelli: A score of 270-300 in first innings for England could set this test up nicely.

Well done, Gary Ballance. He's a very popular member of the team and it was no surprise to me when he was brought back into the side. Some players fit the mould.

  10. 50 runs

    Eng 189-5

He's been on 49 since about over 48 I think (it's over 56 now) but finally Gary Ballance gets to his half-century. A gentle nudge to the leg side off Yasir Shah and a raise of the bat to acknowledge the applause. It's been a gritty innings in difficult circumstances.

    "You expect me to walk?"

"No Mr Moeen, I expect you to drive!" - and the batsman obliges, taking Rahat for a superbly driven four through covers off his back foot. Second ball of the over, and with that fluid combination of hand and bat - great stuff.

But since that last wicket, Moeen has added a measure of stability alongside Ballance and now both batsmen must go again. Rahat with the first over after tea.

And England looked in a lot of trouble at 158-5 when Bairstow tried to cut loose one time too many, giving Sohail his fourth wicket.

Unfortunately for Vince, who scored 39, Sohail proved his undoing.

It had looked like a decent recovery for England both before and after lunch, as Ballance and Vince built their fifty stand. This shot from Ballance showing the timing he was able to generate.

In the spirit of the Bond films theme we have going, England are doing a good job of tip-toeing quietly, almost secretively, past Pakistan's best offerings, after going five wickets down. England added 84 in the second session for the loss of two wickets, which doesn't look too bad until you look at the full scorecard. Sohail Khan has been a breath of fresh air for Pakistan. His first Test for five years brings a wicket, and he celebrates with three more. Top work.

Ballance can be happy with his afternoon's work so far - it's been a good knock by him.

    Ballance 49, Moeen 15

And Ballance will have to wait a bit longer for that half-century. Although in fairness, he had the last ball before tea to try and get that solitary run but it's not to be. Moeen's done his job in any case, of providing Ballance some steady companionship at the middle. It's not been England's session overall, but the shoots of recovery are breaking through bit by bit.

  20. Eng 183-5published at 15:40 British Summer Time 3 August 2016

Just checked the numbers and seems Ballance has been on 49 for about five overs now. If Moeen's aim is to keep the half-century nerves away from him, it's a novel way of doing so, stealing the strike at the end of the over. This time he does that with a risky edged effort, as Amir gets the ball to shape back and it flies wide of slip for four.
