England will be very happy with what they have seen of Hameed. He's extremely composed. It's a better pitch to make your debut on than Ben Duckett had. Watching him is quite exciting.
I've opted for the smoothie over the traditional early morning tea. Jury out on that one. Just the single to Root in the Jadeja over.

That wasn't just narrow. There were lots of questions there to be asked. It's missing leg so much, it would have only hit a fourth stump. It's not close to umpire's call.

That ball to Cook would have missed leg-stump by some distance so the lack of review is even more surprising. Joe Root is the new man and he is off the mark in style with a delightful cover to the ropes.

I would have thought a review was in order. He does tend to shuffle across. The ball pitched middle and leg and then turned. It could have missed the leg stump.

Image source, APThe captain has gone to the first ball after the break. It was not a vintage innings, he was dropped twice and, trying to turn the left-arm spinner, he was struck on the pad. It might have veered towards the leg side but the batsmen decide against a review.

Hameed has given a reminder to Ashwin and the rest that he may look 12 years old, but he knows what he is doing.
There have been no alarms with the spinners, but there were with the seamers. Yadav and Shami are very good bowlers.
Talking of the crowd, there are three ladies sat next to each other resplendent in identical multi-coloured dresses. Hameed collects his fifth boundary with a sweetly struck cover drive off Yadav and he has earned his mid-session drink. A good start for England.

It's a disappointing crowd, even though it's a historic occasion of a first Test in Rajkot. There's a few schoolchildren in the ground.

Cook tries to sweep Jadeja and there is an appeal, but the captain was way outside the line of off stump. After Bangladesh it is surprising we have had no hint of a review yet. Plenty of dropped catches, but no reviews.

Spin from both ends now, with the slow left-arm of local favourite Ravi Jadeja, who has yielded 85 wickets from his first 20 Tests. An exquisite cover drive from Hameed races to the boundary, his fourth four.
The first test of spin as the dangerous Ravichandran Ashwin, with a remarkable 220 wickets in 39 Tests, begins with a slip, leg gully and short-leg. Hameed leaves the final ball that was a little quicker - and a little too close to the off stump for comfort - but the England opener survives. A maiden.

Hameed hasn't been flawless, but it's been pretty impressive. He's watched Cook struggle and, in a curious way, that might have helped him. 'If he's struggling, then I'm allowed to play and miss too'.

At Rajkot they have a mini-version of the Lord's media centre dubbed Cherie Blair's mouth - although we must not mention politics - there are three tiered stands around the rest of the stadium. Cook picks up another boundary with a backfoot force through backward point off Yadav.
