It's a good toss to win, the surface is benign compared to Dhaka, where England were a week ago. We didn't see a fast bowler there for 40 overs. This is a bit of respite for England.

  2. Eng 31-0published at 9 overs

    Cook 13, Hameed 17

Hameed is still going for them when there is width, but fortunately he gets no edge to one from Shami at 89mph. He is wafer thin and his bat is almost wider than he is, but when he wants to defend he looks perfectly solid. A beautiful on drive down the ground brings him two more.

Joshua Beaumont: If India could catch we'd be 20-3 by now

Raj Popat: Looks like India haven't been practising catches, poor in the field so far both openers should have gone

Scott Mabbutt: *Turns off CNN* *turns on test match special* Ahh that's better!

  4. Eng 29-0published at 8 overs

    Cook 13, Hameed 15

Yadav, untucked shirt flapping in the breeze as he approaches the crease, continues with two slips and a gully and Hameed keeps the bowling with a confident single from the final ball of the over.

  5. Eng 25-0published at 7 overs

Hameed, with a nice calm stance at the crease and moderately high backlift, edges one from Shami but, in similar manner to Mike Atherton, he relaxes his hands and it falls short of captain Kohli at second slip

    Geoffrey Boycott
Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

India are wonderful fielders. I'm all for it. Keep doing this for five Tests. This is a cuckoo, regulation. I'm so pleased I'm here to see this.

  7. dropped catch

Dropped catch - Hameed on 13published at 6 overs

    Eng 25-0 (Cook 10, Hameed 13)

A classical leg glance off the pads gives Hameed another boundary but the young man is given a reprieve when Murali Vijay fumbles a low one at first slip, Yadav again the aggrieved bowler.

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

At 19 years and 297 days, Hameed is the fifth youngest player to play for England and the second youngest to open, the youngest being Jack Crawford in 1906.

  9. Eng 20-0published at 5 overs

    Cook 10, Hameed 9

Shami continues and Cook picks up a fortuitous boundary with a thick edge along the ground through the gully, with Rahane again the guilty party, unable to stop it.

Every England supporter knows that the batting has been up and down over the years and we have relied too much on Cook and Root, so this is a big opportunity for Hameed.

  11. Eng 16-0published at 4 overs

    Cook 6, Hameed 9

Yadav up at 90mph with three slips poised. Cook still poking hesitantly but finally he gets some in the middle of the bat and keeps the bowling with a confident push into the off-side.

You've just got to get a few balls out the way. I remember my first Test at Nottingham. I was really nervous as Hameed will be. You just need to stick in there and feel you're way into it. Once you get a thick edge and the odd four, he'll start to play.

Anand Dahihandekar: Cook dropped, very ominous for India

Russell Anderson: Cook all at sea. Perhaps Hameed should have word...

Ed Morgan: Can you imagine the feeling of dropping Ali Cook third ball of a test match? Ground/swallow up doesn't even cover it

  14. Eng 13-0published at 3 overs

    Cook 3, Hameed 9

Hameed is away fourth ball with a defensive push into the off side. First of many one hopes and a gentle smile from the young man.  He has four slips waiting for an edge and he goes for a wide one from Shami, a thick edge flying high over the cordon for his first boundary, then he flashes one off the back foot for four more. I thought this guy batted like Boycott?!

Hameed is a lovely boy. He's got a really nice smile but don't be fooled he's a fighter. He's also got great footwork.

  16. dropped catch

Dropped catch - Cook on 1published at 04:10 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

    Eng 3-0 (Cook 3, Hameed 0)

Cook is leading a charmed life. A tentative edge flies low through second slip. The thickset seamer Umesh Yadav, already up at 88mph, the unlucky man this time. Plenty of life in this pitch, some cracks and even greenish tinges.

A slice of luck there for Cook but I do think that the slips are too close. I thought that as soon as I saw the field set up.

  18. Eng 1-0published at 1 over

Mohammed Shami the unlucky bowler. It was a fairly routine chance but Ajinkya Rahane juggled with it and spilled it. Haseeb Hameed is underway in Test cricket. he calmly leaves his first ball and solidly defends the second from the middle of the bat.

  19. dropped catch

Cook dropped on 0published at 04:03 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

Third ball of the match and Cook is dropped in the gully.
