So, how are you today? Where are you following from? Wrapped under the duvet? Getting ready for work? Somewhere exotic? Maybe researching the next rocket to Mars? There's a cloudless blue sky in Rajkot, but the temperature is comfortable, rather than gas mark one. Nice from Moeen, running at Ashwin to take three through the leg side.

In years gone by you would not have looked at the Indian pace attack and thought they would be quicker than England's.

  3. Eng 114-3published at 36 overs

    Root 43, Moeen 4

Haseeb Hameed is on the England balcony, staring intently at the screen of a laptop. He's got an essay on The Handmaid's Tale due in this afternoon. Eeessh, what's happened here? Shami gets one to skid, Root jams down and edges between the keeper and sole slip for four. Remember, batting is likely to be at its easiest today. It's hard to think what it will be like at the weekend.

Ashwin has a quiff that makes him look like an extra in Grease. He also has the action of a man trying to scratch a hard-to-reach spot on his back. Round the wicket to both leftie Moeen and right-hander Root. Ball threatening to stay lower than a snake's belly. Root twice turns off his pads for single on the leg side.

You don't have to go after the bowling and whack it around, like a Pietersen. Having said that, he played very sensibly at the start of his innings on the last tour here.

  7. Eng 105-3published at 34 overs

Virat Kohli turns to pace after the break, recalling Mohammed Shami to the attack. Left-hander Moeen turns a couple off his hips to get off the mark, then watches as Shami gets the ball to lift outside the off stump. Short leg and man out on the hook. Moeen could get his chin tested.

There's been some tense moments for England here either side of lunch. Moeen was three or four inches away from dismissal there. It didn't quite carry but Ashwin is starting to weave a bit of a spell. So much depends on Joe Root now.

    Eng 102-3

Goodness me. Don't take your eyes off this. If India are the snakes, then England are very much a baby iguana. Moeen takes a couple of paces down the track and jams the ball against his pad. Just short of the diving short leg.

  10. Eng 102-3published at 06:40 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2016

Almost good to go after the break. Moeen Ali the new man. Ashwin with three balls to bowl.

In the India series against South Africa, the ball turned and wickets fell quickly. In the last series against New Zealand, there were big scores and the pitch turned later on. This is how it looks now. The ball will probably turn more a time goes by. If you get on a pitch like this, you want to be greedy, bat four or five sessions.

So much to do for the England middle order again. Let's see how they fare in the afternoon session and to describe it all in his inimitable style, here's Stephan Shemilt back from the Caribbean.

I gave Stuart Broad his debut in Sri Lanka and I was amazed how much he thought about the game. He was always tinkering and setting his own fields, it was a weight off my shoulders. Straight away we knew he would take time to develop but you know when you've found a special cricketer.

He has always produced magic on the big stage. He has that mentality. He is a bowler of great spells rather than a great bowler, but he will go down as a great bowler. At the end of his career he made the difference. When they needed something to happen in an Ashes series he would produce. He can wipe through a batting line-up. I hope his mindset is to play for a few more years.

Stuart Broad's best moment was in the whitewash in Brisbane when they wouldn't even print his name in the paper. He took them on, 40,000 people booing him all day, and he got a six for.
