Have you been following the election all night? Did you get up early to be on top of the cricket? If you're flagging, let me know. I've just called for the coffee. Only one slip now for Jadeja to Root, India well and truly on the back foot. Two singles from it - Kohli calls a conflab. "We thought these guys would be seven down by now, what's going on?"

There are some mitigating circumstances, mind. This surface isn't offering a great deal for the bowlers. There's some turn but, compared to Bangladesh, it's like batting on the M6. India have also been curiously defensive. With the hosts in retreat, there are plenty of gaps on the emerald green outfield for the ball to be worked into. Mishra is milked, Indian brows are furrowed.

England women have restricted Sri Lanka to 168-7 from 50 overs in the first one-day international in Colombo.

Attack leader Katherine Brunt (above) took the last two Sri Lankan wickets to fall and finished with 2-35 from her 10 overs.

Captain Heather Knight took 2-29 from eight overs while Danielle Hazell, Beth Langston and Alex Hartley picked up one wicket each.

The hosts' batters were nothing if not consistent - the top five all scored between 24 and 27.

    Root 69, Moeen 30

Jadeja has got flashes of red on the back of his spikes. Footwear looking more suited to basketball than cricket. When Root isn't finding the boundary, he's looking to push and run. Single on the off side, plenty of gaps to exploit. Midway through this first day, the problems are India's.

The other thing Joe Root has done well is take time between deliveries, not allowing the bowler to dictate the time of the over and upset the bowler's rhythm.

Amit Mishra has served up his fair share of full tosses. Joe Root, like a Briton at the breakfast buffet, doesn't miss out, helping it to the leg-side fence for four. Is this the same India attack that routed New Zealand? Is this the same England batting that didn't know what was going on in Bangladesh?

When Alastair Cook is in form and making hundreds he doesn't give the bowlers a sniff of a chance. He seals up one end and it's easier for players at the other end to make runs.

So it's spin from both ends, putting tremendous strain on the live texter's fingers. A bit like that on an animator when a cartoon goes out live. Cheteshwar Pujara isn't in a good place, standing short leg when Moeen gets on the sweep. Blow taken, life flashing before the eyes. England's progress is worryingly unflustered. It's a little unsettling...

Joe Root is the player India have to watch out for in this series.

Virat Kohli shuffles his pack, turning to the short, slightly padded figure of Amit Mishra. Leggies, with a slip and gully in place. Full length, quite flat, again no great turn off the surface. A leg-side delivery is swept fine for a couple by Joe Root.

This partnership has been very impressive because there has been very little playing and missing and they have rotated the strike. They have run brilliantly between the wickets and the bowlers find the left hand/right hand combination difficult.

Under Virat Kohli India like to get on with it. They are getting through the overs, not hanging around, and they have had some fairly short games recently.

Ravi Jadeja, behind his shades, is skipping in towards Moeen Ali, not really threatening to turn the ball. It's tight stuff, but nothing that would get you out unless you were feeling particularly cavalier. England inching on. Slowly, slowly, catchy monkey. Time for a drink.

Following TMS with my colleagues in the office of our Football Academy in Kuala Lumpur. My American wife wasn't best pleased with the election results coming in when I left our apartment earlier. I doubt her mood will have improved, even with a Joe Root half century! Shout out to all the kids at The Goal Academy!

It looked dicey for England when they lost three for 55 in the second hour, but this pair have steadied the ship. Honours even, maybe just in favour of the tourists. However, without sounding 'too Boycott', sticking a couple of wickets on there wouldn't look too clever.

Moeen has played really well, he looks comfortable. I know I said the seamers haven't been able to move the ball but he looks good, his feet are going and once he gets in the scoreboard rotates.

England win one of the key battlegrounds, getting through R Ashwin's post-lunch spell. Ravi Jadeja comes on for his left-arm tweak, bowling round the wicket. I said that Mohammed Shami has a good beard, but Jadeja is something else. It's quite wonderful, like Hank Scorpio from the Simpsons. Single apiece, 50 partnership.

The seamers have bowled quite well for India and haven't got any results. That's what happened this morning when three catches went down. Now it is harder for the ball to carry when the ball is old. It's not moving, there is no reverse or anything.

    Partnership 48

England have regularly been foxed by the lack of bounce today, Alastair Cook and Joe Root especially hanging on the back foot when the ball has barely got stump high. Once more, Root is almost chopping on off the pacy Yadav, the ball just missing the off stump. Later in the same over, the ball climbs and pins Root on the thigh pad. All we ask for is consistency, ref.
