Having mainly shaped his deliveries away, there is some movement from Woakes into Gambhir, but the left-hander's inside edge goes into his foot rather than the stumps. Another maiden for the seamer, however.

This is going to be an engrossing battle - England are looking very solid at the moment. The 50 partnership is only one small step in a long journey though.

  3. Ind 50-0published at 16 overs

    Vijay 22, Gambir 18

Captain Cook almost wore a firm drive from Gambhir and he has donned the shin pads and a helmet to prevent any further scare. Gambhir clips Moeen for a single to record the 50 partnership, the first in Tests between this pair, whose previous best was a mere 16.

  4. Ind 49-0published at 15 overs

    Eng 537

They have lovely padded chairs in the TV com box unlike those in the radio room, there seems to be discrimination afoot, but Sunny Gavaskar looks happy in there. Stokes was cramping up during his century, and he left the field earlier, a fear all England followers have, but he is back on now and can bowl at 4:31, 11:01 GMT. A better over from Woakes and he records his first maiden.

Gambhir has an open stance out there in the middle, much more pronounced than I remember.

How does a creme caramel differ from a creme brulee? Continuing the culinary theme, there is a peach of a delivery from Moeen that spins in to the right-handed Vijay, it squeezes between bat and pad and misses the off stick by a whisker, running away for four byes to infuriate a blameless Bairstow behind the timbers.

Geoffrey has brought his own cheese and tomato sandwiches today. For his tea last night, he ate three creme caramels.

  8. Ind 44-0published at 13 overs

    Vijay 21, Gambhir 17

A low full toss from Woakes is put away through the off side by the left-handed Gambhir. Can England find a breakthrough in the 10 overs that remain today?

Dan Gee: Is it worrying, that as a pessimistic England cricket fan I'm already thinking "This game is getting away from us"?

Moeen again, nothing much doing for him so far but just a couple of singles conceded and his first four overs have only cost four runs.

  11. Day two so farpublished at 10:22 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2016

Just a brief recap of the day so far, England resumed on 311-4 and Moeen Ali, 99 overnight, completed his first overseas century in a flurry of early runs.

Ben Stokes was dropped twice but became the third England centurion and put on 99 with Jonny Bairstow, who hit two sixes in a quickfire 46.

England added 226 with their final six wickets today, 139-2 in the morning and 87-4 in an extended afternoon session.

  13. Ind 37-0published at 11 overs

    Vijay 21, Gambhir 11

Woakes returns after an opening two-over spell of 0-9. Just the two conceded in this one and he is up at 85mph. India exactly 500 behind now.

Gentle spin from Moeen but no sign of that delivery that spat up and bounced. Gambhir gathers two more.

This is a good, solid beginning by India. When you have been out in the field for a day and a half you can be mentally tired. That doesn't seem to be the case with the Indian openers - they are batting well.

From Dave in Winchester: Just when you think the wife finally understands the game she asks if it's being played in the UK! In November at 7.00am!

Dave, I know someone very well who would have a word with you about use of the phrase "the wife"!

Vijay looks in silky touch, a delightful cover drive is followed by another boundary, which is barely a defensive push down the ground. A third four in the over is guided down to third man and bowler Broad shakes his head, all too aware that this is not the pitch he would have chosen for his 100th Test.

That's interesting, it's taken a chunk out of the earth, turned and bounced - and it was on a driving length.

From Harry in London: I have a meeting in five minutes so I'm trying to rig up a system to loop my headphones through my shirt and out of my sleeve so I can lean on one hand whilst listening out for an England breakthrough. It's like I'm back in school.
