Some spin from Moeen and there is a piece of the pitch dislodged. The ball beats everything, flashing blade, off-stump and diving wicketkeeper and it goes away for four byes. Moeen can record another maiden for his analysis though.

Another maiden, Broad's first. He is not causing the batsmen many concerns, and the two slips and a gully might not have much to do for a while, but he is keeping the runs at bay.

Louis Samuels: As a former local lad, great to hear via BBC live text that @rocks1883 are top of the league.

Doug Woodcock: As a Dulwich Hamlet fan, seeing Regis top of the league sickens me.

    Get used to it Douglas.

Time for some spin and Moeen, who earlier today completed his first overseas Test century, is the first cab off the rank. He has a slip and a short leg waiting, there is no dramatic spin as there was in Bangladesh but he begins to Gambhir with a maiden, which were a rarity over there.

He's also been nonchalantly hit for two fours though, Prof. By the way, we're still fairly confident there has not been a Test player who has had two professors for parents as Zafar Ansari does, but checking it might be tricky, even for the remarkable Andrew Samson. A steady over from Broad but both batsmen collect singles and there is not much encouragement for the seamers.

I think Woakes might have to go around the wicket, the ball's not doing anything. He hasn't hit any decent line or length yet.

Width from Woakes and Gambhir is able to steer the ball, despite minimal footwork, wide of backward point to the boundary.

It's lucky we have the pace bowlers on with their long run-ups, I have needed that time to check the last time Gambhir made a Test century. It was in January 2010, a span of 52 innings, but his average is still an impressive 42. Broad continues and Viijay strokes him away through the covers for two more.

  13. Ind 8-0published at 2 overs

    Eng 537 all out

Gautam Gambhir, who was under the helmet himself earlier today at the age of 35, is playing his 58th Test and has 22 fifties and nine hundreds. The left-hander opens his account as Chris Woakes strays on to the pads and it is clipped away neatly for four. "Buffet ball" for you Boycott Bingo players.

From anonymous: Sitting in Mettricks cafe overlooking Guildhall Square and the park in Southampton. The sun is shining and England are piling on the runs. It feels like it's still summer. As Richie Benaud used to say "simply marvellous". Carry on scoring.

  15. Ind 4-0published at 1 over

    Eng 537

Stuart Broad got a silver cap in a frame for his 100th Test and he also has the new ball, with three slips, a gully and new boy Haseeb Hameed under the helmet at short leg, but Murali Vijay clips him off the pads for four and Geoffrey Boycott laments "a gimme ball."

You are not going to create many opportunities on this surface, you can just hope for some tired minds and tired bodies. And catch them - you must catch them.

Those chairs in the TMS com box do not particularly comfortable, surely a man of Sunny Gavaskar's legendary status should not be subjected to a plastic deck chair? They look like the sort of ones they have down the left wing at Bognor Regis Town FC that my dad used to sit on. Top of the Ryman League, external those magnificent boys in green and white by the way. Fabulous. But the cricketers are back out and we're all set to begin the India innings.
