I wonder if we might see some Ben Stokes fireworks now he has reached three figures? After numerous dives for his ground, he's got a smear of brown dirt on the front of his shirt as he waits for Ravichandran Ashwin. He gives himself room, exposing the stumps, but can't pierce the field.

Forget the all-rounder tag, Ben Stokes is a fine batsman in his own right He can play.

On yes! Ben Stokes rocks back and hammers Ravi Jadeja through the covers for four to bring up his fourth Test hundred. The last time he played against India, he got three ducks, now he has a ton. There's been luck - three times he could have been caught - but there have also been some lovely straight drives and brutal strikes through the leg side. He removes his helmet and waves to the England balcony. It's quiet in the ground, though. The home fans aren't sharing this moment.

    Stokes 97, Ansari 3

I'm looking again at the chap who has his entire torso painted in the India flag, with Pujara on his belly. Does he do that every day? I mean, you wouldn't go to bed like that, would you? Does he need some help getting the paint on? It must be tricky getting around the back. Ansari is doing his bit for Stokes, defending Jadeja, getting a couple via an overthrow. Stokes will have the strike on 97...

India will test Stokes' patience, recalling Ravi Ashwin to the attack. Is Stokes up for waiting? A reverse sweep suggests not, but it still brings him a single off an edge. Slip and silly point, cat and mouse. How are you going to get to a century, Ben?

Stokes looks like a man who might get to a century in singles. Defend, defend, defend against Jadeja, then nudge a comfortable one through mid-on. Four more needed. Ansari holds up his end of the bargain.

England have lost three wickets for 23 runs. Any thoughts of a score well in excess of 500 may have to tempered for now. Zafar Ansari is the new man - number 10 very low for a man who averages 30 in Test cricket (the question of if Ansari is the best option to bowl spin and bat 10 in this side is a different conversation entirely).

Stokes! Single pinched to mid-off, Ashwin throws. Stokes dives and may well have been toast, but the shy flashes by.

It wasn't a great dismissal. He played five dot balls and then goes for a lofted clip into the leg side. It's a soft dismissal. He could have just played out a maiden, knowing Stokes is bristling at the other end.

Adil Rashid, this is awful. You have Ben Stokes at the other end hunting a century, the chance to put India on the barbecue, and you play this shambolic stroke. Is it a flick? A clip? What exactly is he trying to do? Working against the spin of Ravi Jadeja, he presents a simple catch to mid-on. Not the work of a man who has 10 first-class hundreds.

That's the third time that Stokes has had a life today, following two drops in successive overs by keeper Wriddhiman Saha. He lives on, his quest for a fourth Test ton underpinning England's glut of more than 150 runs already today. Shami comes round the wicket to the left-hander, firing in a yorker than has Stokes dancing like a cowboy who has just had a bullet fired at his feet. Dug out, two taken.
