Chance! Huge chance! Ben Stokes looks to hit Ravi Jadeja out of the state, but can only top edge straight up in the air. The ball is dropping between mid-wicket Virat Kohli and mid-on Murali Vijay, with the skipper deciding he will take responsibility. He hares after it, dives full-length but can't even get a hand on it. It probably should have been Vijay's catch. Let-off for Stokes, who homes in on a ton.

You don't see Ben Stokes bowl too many overs in the nets these days - he's such a key commodity to the England team. Incidentally, the nets at this ground are superb. There are dozens of them lined up next to each other.

India are trying to keep Stokes off strike, but he's quick enough to take two when he drops Shami on to the leg side. In the sparse crowd, some young girls make a din and, in another part of the ground, a man painted in the colours of the India flag has 'Pujara' painted on his belly. There's confusion between Stokes and Rashid, but Amit Mishra mis-fields at mid-on. Kohli, behind some rascal shades, looks murderous.

Jadeja, all designer stubble and shades, is firing these left-armers in. He gurns and grimaces at Stokes, who probably doesn't come across any of these flashy types in Cumbria. When Rashid is on strike, Jadeja is happy to be more subtle - less pace, more air. One from it.

Mohammed Shami is India's Lazarus. Yesterday he was hobbling around like a man who might have to have his leg off, today he is charging in. Ben Stokes has to show some Riverdance footwork to keep the ball away from his stumps, then Virat Kohli misses with a throw that would have had Adil Rashid short of his ground. Plenty happening.

I'm surprised Rashid is in instead of Ansari, but Rashid is a more inventive batsman and will keep the scoreboard ticking a bit more.

    Jadeja 23-2-71-2

Looking again, Woakes just didn't know if it was time for breakfast or a haircut. Nothing shot - neither defence or leave - hint of turn, enough for the edge. Adil Rashid is the new man, coming in ahead of advertised number nine Zafar Ansari. Is that to keep it right-left hand?

There was just a little flicker of turn and it was an indeterminate prod from Woakes with the face open. It's a disappointing dismissal for Woakes who scored runs in Bangladesh.

India strike in the first over after the break, Chris Woakes edging behind to his first delivery after tea and cake. Ravi Jadeja fizzes in a left-arm tweaker from round the wicket, with Woakes unable to withdraw the bat in an attempted leave. Remarkably, Wriddhiman Saha clings on.

If you're the England spinners, you might think that India's are struggling so you won't be under as much pressure. On the other hand, it's not turning, so how might India's batsmen enjoy England's bowlers?

On the subject of those dropped catches, what did India expect to get when they put the bloke who used to play up front for Manchester United behind the stumps?

    Cheers, JL.

Just waking up? You've missed a Moeen Ali century, Ben Stokes being dropped by Wriddhiman Saha (twice is successive overs) and a whole stack of England runs.

At 450-6, they are bossing this Test.

Here's how Ben Stokes has dominated the bowling again this morning and we shall look forward to watching more of the same when the afternoon session begins in a few moments. There had been no overseas century in India since 2012 before this match. We've had two, could there be a third? This is of course not a blame culture but it will not be my fault if belligerent Ben does not do it. Stephan Shemilt will tell you everything that transpires in the afternoon session.
