Need 5 to avoid the follow-on

In fairness to Broad, he's keeping the scoreboard ticking over. I doubt India would enforce the follow-on, but Broad's lusty biffing could well save it anyway. When Jayant tosses it up, Broad belts through cover for four. I wouldn't want to be a bowler in Virat Kohli's side. Every boundary is greeted by some sort of expletive.

Broad was a magnificent late-order player. Since he got hit by the Indian seamer, he's not been the same player. That's a real test for a sports psychologist - to get into his head. The talent is there but now he's a shadow of himself. Once you're slightly afraid, you can't bat properly. It's like a worm in your head.

Spidercam hangs over the pitch like the Sword of Damocles poised above the England batsmen. Broad, all legs and armguard, gets more deliveries off the edge than out of the middle, top-edging a sweep for a single that sees him retain the strike.

The wicket isn't that different but the tempo of the game has changed - the nervousness of the batsmen, the noise of the crowd. Indian crowds can go from serenity to really making their voices heard.

Thanks to Richard Asquith on Twitter, who has just pointed out that Ansari has a double first from Cambridge. Just goes to show, doesn't it? Kohli decides he wants the off-spin of Jayant Yadav against left-hander Broad, a decision that almost pays dividends when an inside edge flashes past short leg. Right now, India are the big cat, pawing at an England mouse.

Rashid is a funny sort of player. He's very wristy, very much like an Indian player. He's matured a lot in the last few years at Yorkshire and now he's playing for England a bit more regularly. He's a decent cricketer.

India are crawling all over England here. After the credit of the draw in Rajkot, this is much more like what we expected from this tour. Rashid, previously so good against the pacers, is looking slightly befuddled against Ashwin. An edge brings a couple, but only exposes Broad to the next over.

    Jadeja 28-10-54-1

It's hard to describe how bad that stroke was. Most club players would have backed themselves to get at least some bat on what wasn't much more than a half-volley. With no feet, Ansari missed it by an unfathomable distance. Stuart Broad is the new man. We're still waiting to hear news of the scan he had on his foot.

It's the sort of delivery that looks like you're not ready for the bowler. But he was ready.

That is absolutely plumb. This is awful in so many ways.

My word. Zafar Ansari should have his ban extended for a frivolous review. It's hitting the middle of middle. Somehow, he's missed a half-volley and been hit in front of all three. Missing off, missing leg, taking out the middle pole. The rest of England's innings might not take long.

His legs got tangled up and his bat got lodged behind his pad.

I really don't know why he missed that - it was just a half-volley.

This looks very out. Surely the only thing that can save Zafar Ansari is an inside edge? If he's not hit it, Ravi Jadeja has got him leg before.

    Rashid 24, Ansari 4

Listening to the weather forecast last night, I expected to wake up to snowmageddon. No white stuff for me, just rain. If you've got some powder, let me know. Rashid's patience expires when he belts a slog sweep off Ashwin for four. Ugly.

Got up with a tiny fraction of hope looking at the live feed. I didn't want to switch on TMS as I was convinced it would be bad luck. Then thought, that's nonsense, turned it on. Stokes out immediately.

Ah, the cricketing dream. We've all had them. The usual nightmare is that you're next in but haven't got your pads on. No matter how quickly you try, you just can't get ready to bat. Jadeja twinkles in, spearing in his left-armers over the wicket to Rashid. Remember when the new ball was being carted around? We're playing a different game now.

Checking the live text while drifting in and out of sleep can have weird side effects. I dreamt earlier that England had recovered to post 457 all out. This was followed by a dream in which the match was actually taking place in a studio in front of a blue screen, with the pitch, stumps, outfield and crowd all added in later through CGI. I still can't decide which of these two scenarios is more implausible.
