Virat Kohli, looking like a dictator behind his shades, may be about to combust. He kisses and makes up with Umesh, who dare not bowl one in the batsman's half. A short ball is pulled for four by Rashid before Stokes plays an on-drive so violent it wouldn't be out of place in a Tarantino film. The new ball is going to all parts, so India suggest it's gone out of shape. The way Stokes is hitting it, it might do.

It's a better angle from around the wicket. If you do get uneven, low bounce, more often than not you're going to get the ball going onto the stumps.

You're not bothering to get up at this time on a Saturday, are you? If you insist on being awake, stay under the duvet, get TMS on your phone or wireless and read these witterings. England have lost Jonny Bairstow after a century stand with Ben Stokes, who is now attempting to fend off the new ball in the company of Adil Rashid. Good lord, that's kept lower than a snake's belly from Mohammed Shami. Stokes' off stump remains, but it was only missed by the width of a cigarette paper.

It's hard to set a field for somebody like Adil Rashid. You don't know where it's going to go. Ultimately he doesn't know where it's going to go. I think he'll see a few more short balls.

    Stokes 61, Rashid 13

So far, so good for England against the new nut. Umesh gets too leggy to Rashid, who flicks fine for four and follows up with a Joe Root-style drive square on the off side for four more. Umesh, not impressed at being spread about by a number eight, bangs one in and pins Rashid on the glove. Adil's response? The dreamiest of cover drives. Virat Kohli is livid. Get loose, Ravi Ashwin.

The new ball will definitely bring more scoring opportunities for somebody like Stokes. All he has to do is lean on it. The field is very spread out, considering the second new ball has been taken.

That is quite wonderful from Stokes, a sweetly timed on-drive off the toes that screams to the wide mid-on boundary. It's the sort of cricket shot that you could take home to meet your mother. Forget about the bowling, this lad is a proper batsman. His Test average, by the way, is touching 37. His bowling average is 33.59. I suppose a batting mark over 40 and a bowling number under 30 is the holy grail for an all-rounder.

    Stokes 56, Rashid 1

Definite swing with the new cherry, but Rashid, 10 first-class tons to his name, isn't concerned. Three catchers behind the bat and a short leg all crouch, with Rashid ducking a bumper.

With the new ball on this type of wicket, it could fly off the bat faster - but you must be aware of the skid too. Ben Stokes has to be really wary of that kind of delivery.

England have got to try and take as much time out of the game as possible. Even if England don't reach the follow-on, I think India will bat again. Then you will start to look at how many overs you need to bat out a draw. It's possible.

Umesh Yadav is round the wicket at t'other end, still with the old ball, half of which looks like it's been chewed by the dog. Every so often, a cheer comes from the crowd. Hang on, here comes an umpire. Why wasn't the new ball already out there?

Shami is firing the ball into a good length. It skids on so you've got to get your momentum moving back towards the ball. So far Rashid is doing it well.

Shami is the beardalike of Misbah-ul-Haq. He's charging to the crease in this circular amphitheatre, with Adil Rashid looking keen to play the sort of strokes not entirely in keeping with the situation. Zafar Ansari waits with his pads on, still looking a bit peaky. When Rashid is hit on the ankle, India appeal, but it wouldn't have hit a third set.

The players are back out. The new ball is available, but I don't think it's been taken right away. Mohammed Shami has the old leather.

Somerset all-rounder Peter Trego: "I'm massively motivated to be as good a cricketer as I can be - and whatever happens in the media, I'll go after that as hard as I go after the ball. If one day I'm in one of those X-Men movies, I know I'll have made my kids proud."

Cheers, Amy. If you were dreaming of a glorious England fightback, it might be best to go back to sleep. Bairstow and Stokes were quite brilliant this morning, but it would still take something special just to be 100 behind.
