Haseeb Hameed, having just watched Alastair Cook cling on during that last over, seems in no hurry to get down and face the spin. He carries on doing what he does best; blocking, ignoring and ducking under a short ball. We've had 11 runs in 11 overs this session. Even I can do the maths on that one.

As a Proteas fan reading the TMS feed, I am loving the Aussie banter! Here's to 3-0..! It's a tough life out here but someone has to do it.

Runs! Alastair Cook cuts Ravindra Jadeja through square to bring up England's 50. It's starting to turn and bounce, though, and Cook tries to sweep and gets rapped on the pad. He's outside the line but the four catchers around the bat make their displeasure known. Jadeja ends with a beauty, one that spits and rears up into Cook's chest.

Shami is working up good pace - he's looked sharp all series. But, he's meeting a barn door. There's great patience and obduracy from Hameed in particular.

I don't like this. It's all suspiciously competent. Haseeb Hameed wanders off to thump his thigh as he misses one from Mohammed Shami that jags back, into his midriff. There's not much meat on his bones, as my mother would say, and that came back in to him at about 90mph. A nice little reminder for him there.

I have read all of Clive James' books, so somewhere quiet in the field would do nicely...

Ooh, that spun! That spun horribly nicely. Alastair Cook did well to readjust and glove it down to safety. Just a touch quicker from Ravindra Jadeja. There's plenty of rough by Cook's foot for him to aim into.

They are playing their natural games, which is based on occupying the crease. Hameed just doesn't look bothered, while Cook is playing in the way he always does. The ball doesn't seem to have spun much - the wicket seems to be sleeping.

    Target 405

Alastair Cook gets his bat onto one from Umesh Yadav that jagged back a fair way. Probably would have been going down leg, but Cook did well to get bat on them. It's difficult to think of any actual chances that these two have offered up so far. Hameed offers a defensive stroke to a half volley from Yadav, and then holds his pose like a statue as Yadav collects his hat from the umpire.

If England get through tonight with no wickets, it will lift the dressing room. There were plenty who made mistakes in the first innings, rather than being bowled out.

Lost Without You by Delta Goodrem was a brilliant song. Anyway, Viat Kohli has decided to try a bit of spin, with Ravindra Jadeja turning his arm over. The change of pace doesn't both Hameed in the slightest, even when Jadeja finds the outside edge. Soft hands make sure the ball bounces before it gets to Ajinkya Rahane at slip.

James Abbott: Bumped into Alf Stewart from Home and Away in Southampton street once. Happy with 12th man.

HombreVerde: I bought Delta Goodrem's debut album. Middle order slogger and off spinner, I'm here when they need me.

    Target 405

My colleague has just described this innings as heroically slow, which sums it up nicely. Virat Kohli is continuing with seam, but neither bowler is getting that awkward bounce that Stuart Broad managed this morning. Alastair Cook is content to lean on his bat and have a natter with Rod Tucker at the non-striker's. I can only hope Cook managed to get a dig in about Australia.

More off stump theory from Mohammed Shami, dutifully ignored by Haseeb Hameed. There's the odd ball that keeps horribly low, but that's a shot and a half. Shami strays onto Hameed's pads and he's not going to miss out on that, working it away for the fourth boundary of the innings.

Anthony Bradshaw: I once bought an espresso for the actor Geoffrey Rush in Trieste. He signed a 'Pirates' autograph for my daughter. I'll bowl.

    Target 405

Who will blink first? Alastair Cook is ignoring everything that doesn't require a jab of the bat. Umesh Yadav is tempting him outside the off stump. There's nothing happening for either of them.

India won't be worried, but they will be concerned. They haven't got a wicket and they haven't caused too many problems.

    Cook 29, Hameed 13

Mohammed Shami bowls to Haseeb Hameed, who looks like a good gust of wind will blow him over. He's not going to be tempted into any of Shami's deliveries that hug his off stump, clipping instead off his pads for a single. Stuart Broad is staring intently at a laptop up in the dressing room, in favour of watching Alastair Cook nurdle another run through the leg side.
