Good lord, this is quick. More reverse from Umesh, with the ball through Bairstow quicker than a hiccup. Somehow, it's missed the pads, the lug stump and the keeper before running for four byes. It's probably put a hole in the advertising board. Meanwhile, Ben Stokes stares at a laptop with his head on his fists. It's like he's been given extra homework.

Buttler is just starting to get going. I think he's trying to find his balance, more than anything. England can't afford any more gifts. They've offered four gifts to India today. It was a really good toss for England to have won and they've not capitalised on it at this stage.

  3. Eng 173-5published at 55 overs

    Bairstow 60, Buttler 16

England's keeping situation is confusing, isn't it? First it was Bairstow, then Buttler with Bairstow as a bat. Then Buttler got dropped but kept keeping in one-dayers, with Bairstow in as a bat. Now Buttler is back, but Bairstow keeps keeping. Jayant looks for a Roger Harper-style run out on Buttler, but it only takes one replay to show that Jos is back in his ground.

  4. Australia fight to avoid series whitewashpublished at 08:09 Greenwich Mean Time 26 November 2016

We could be on for a belting finish to the day-night Test in Adelaide.

South Africa, faced with a first-innings deficit of 124 after bowling Australia out for 383, reached 100-2 at dinner on day three, with opener Stephen Cook unbeaten on 43.

Australia, who are aiming to avoid a first Test series whitewash on home soil, may lead by 24 with one session remaining today, but the fact they must bat last on this pitch might just complicate matters.

Just waking up? Morning. It's the weekend, no need to get out of bed. England have so far wasted the benefit of winning the toss, with four of the five wickets to fall gift-wrapped to India. Jonny Bairstow needs a mate and Jos Buttler is trying to be just that. Buttler guides a wide on to third man for four, then almost comes a cropper to a late reversing in-ducker. Ooofff. Another edge for four. Far from convincing.

Lots of people mentioning Bell but no mention of Hildreth. He has got thousands of runs on the only English wicket, Somerset, that consistently turns throughout the match. At his age not one for the future (although unlucky not to have played before) but given the age of this team no bad thing to have an older head in the dressing even if he had only been picked for this tour.

A Yadav from each end as off-spinner Jayant joins the fray. Jos Buttler is probably secretly delighted that Ashwin and Jadeja are out of the attack and celebrates with some tidy footwork to punch down the ground for a single.

The brisk Umesh is getting a hint of reverse hoop back into right-hander Bairstow, who adjusts his helmet and peers at his bat like it is the Mirror of Erised. Probing maiden, with Bairstow providing answers to the questions.

    Bairstow 58, Buttler 2

Buttler has been at the crease for a few minutes is starting to look a little more assured. A nice drive down the ground off Ashwin for a single, then some punches straight to fielders on the off side, then a good, solid block. Battle.

This is what good Indian sides are good at. They get the wicket and then they ratchet it up. There are no easy runs. There's a bit more tension out there and nothing to hit.

  14. Eng 154-5published at 50 overs

Jadeja is actually withdrawn in favour of the meaty Umesh Yadav, I think I'd have wanted the spinner to bowl a little more at Buttler, but there are many reasons when Virat Kohli is India captain and I'm not. I couldn't pull his shades off, for a start. Pacer Umesh, bandage on his left arm, goes wide of the crease and cranks up the wheels while Cook and Moeen have a grin on the England balcony. Nothing that you have done today is funny, gents.

The players have taken drinks, I've taken a shot of adrenaline. Ashwin, once again favouring the Ultimate Warrior method of applying sun cream to the face, sneaks in from behind the umpire and drifts a teaser past Bairstow's outside edge. A single from Jonny keeps Buttler from Jadeja. That's probably a good thing.

Bairstow has demonstrated that it is a good batting surface. We've seen the odd one start to turn and that will happen increasingly as the game goes on. If you can occupy the crease and stay on before it properly starts to disintegrate, you are doing your side a favour.

    Bairstow 55, Buttler 1

Without being unkind, Jos Buttler is batting like a man who was dropped for some awful form and has since done nothing to earn a recall. Sometimes it's French cricket, other times he's beaten, before finally getting off the mark with a Red Bull single to mid-off. Dig in, Joseph.
