  1. Eng 220-6published at 71 overs

Jadeja hasn't looked dangerous today, and yet he's taken two wickets. Shows how off England's batting has been on this good pitch. He whizzes through another over, which Woakes negotiates. He looks wonderfully laid back at the crease, driving the ball through the covers for a couple.

It's been a frustrating day for England. Every time they've developed a partnership, they've lost a wicket - and day two is the best day to bat at Mohali.

England look short. This score is very, very light.

    Woakes 2, Bairstow 70

Jimmy Anderson spent the afternoon session sat on the balcony in his training gear, but he's nipped off now, presumably to put his pads on. Bairstow continues much in the same way he started, blocking everything he needs to block and threading the field for a single to keep the score ticking over. Just another 10 overs until the new ball is available.

RightJudgeIam: My fault, just tuned in, first ball I hear is a wicket... I'll get my coat.

Richard Shelley: Whatever the first-innings score I cannot see England taking 20 wickets to win the match.

  6. Eng 215-6published at 69 overs

    Jadeja 16-2-43-2

Buttler was fuming with himself as he walked off there, and rightly so. All that hard work for not a lot of reward. Kohli greets the new man Woakes with three men under his nose and a fired up Jadeja at the other end. Woakes ignores them all, steering the ball through third man to get off the mark.

It may have turned a fraction and he didn't quite get it in the middle of the bat. But it still travelled quickly.

If I was England, I'd try not giving wickets away. That's a misjudgement from Buttler and another tame dismissal from an England batsman. Buttler was trying to tiptoe down the pitch to Jadeja but he couldn't loft the ball over Kohli. Kohli comes foward at extra-cover, snaffles the catch and throws the ball furiously into the pitch in celebration.

Lancs fan here - pleased for Jos but looking mournfully at a summer where our best keeper, best batsman and best bowler are all in the England Test side. Fair to say I am less than confident about life in Div 1.

  10. Eng 213-5published at 68 overs

Hello. Buttler survives an lbw shout from Shami and the India slip cordon. A thick inside edge, plus a very quick shake of the head from Kohli, stopped India throwing away a review. Shami returns to bowling outside off stump, Buttler carries on leaving and guiding away the odd single.

Buttler has played so well. There can't be many players who have come is as under-prepared as he was.

  12. Eng 212-5published at 67 overs

    Bairstow 69, Buttler 42

Buttler has looked in much better touch ever since those early, streaky boundaries went his way. He faces up to Jadeja and he and Bairstow rotate the strike for a couple. Jadeja mixes up his lengths, trying to get one of them to have a big, booming drive, but there's nothing forthcoming.

Pete: Dear Roper from Richmond, the correct saying is "what goes around". If you're going to insult the English please do so properly.

Lawrence in Rye, Victoria: I've got a jar of Marmite in my pantry. Can I open the bowling?

David Elliott: I had to change at Luton airport en route to Edinburgh from Madrid. Surely that qualifies me to open the England batting?

  14. Eng 210-5published at 66 overs

The two JB's aren't being drawn into any unnecessary risks. It's throwing Shami off his line, as he spears some rubbish down leg and a sprawling Parthiv does well to cut it off. It's all gone quiet out there, India trying to fool England into making mistakes and the batsmen resisting.

  15. Eng 208-5published at 65 overs

    Jadeja 14-2-39-1

Buttler takes on the close field with a little push of Jadeja. The lurking fielder is quick, but not as quick as Buttler, who gets home safely before another aircraft roars overhead.

England have at least got out of the initial hole they dug themselves, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

  17. Eng 207-5published at 64 overs

    Bairstow 67, Buttler 39

Here's Mohammed Shami, who has been excellent in this series so far. He hugs Bairstow's off stump with each delivery, but Bairstow plays everything safely and calmly. It really is a good pitch, which just shows how infuriating England's top order will be with their dismissals.

  18. Eng 207-5published at 63 overs

Jadeja continues, faced with a Buttler who had got his eye in just before tea. Buttler is in behind everything, bat straight, not taking any risks. The shadows from the stands are just starting to appear on the pitch.

Right, here we go. Everyone's back out. England have two hours to not lose a wicket, gifted or otherwise, and get to that 300 mark.

    Jos Buttler batsImage source, AP

How is it that Jos Buttler, a man who has not seen a red ball for ages, can outscore the top four English batsmen? It says something about application to me.

    Richard Courtney in Streatham

I don't want to see the nervous prodding trying-to-play-like-a-Test-player Buttler, let him have a go. It's not his fault he's got a constantly inept top six ahead of him, he shouldn't have to alter due to them, that's what got him dropped in the UAE.
