Ishant's lustrous locks remain neatly contained by his hairband and he has control over the England batsmen too, his opening seven overs conceding just five runs. Moeen is a very fluent batsman as we all know, but his seven runs have taken 39 balls.

BBC World Service's "Stumped" programme this week has spoken to India captain Virat Kohli’s childhood coach and mentor Rajkumar Sharma.

Kohli saluted him in the crowd in Mumbai when he made his 235 against England.

Ashwin again, probing away with his methodical off-spin. No maiden yet for the maestro, with Root keeping the scoreboard in operation and England eyeing the respite of the luncheon interval, as are we all.

He only gets one of them, the five runs are penalties. They changed that recently. The batsman used to get the runs. Henry Olonga once got a seven in a Test under the old rules.    

It's a six from an inside edge past leg-stump! Only a single to Root of course off Ashwin, but England collect five penalty runs as Kohli's throw hits the vacant helmet behind the stumps.

Joe has got new gloves and he has called for a new bat now, after sweeping Mishra for his fifth boundary. That is brought out by his new county captain Gary Ballance, accompanied in matching tabard by Finn, who has the trusty water bottle.

A change of ends for Ashwin and he sends down a rare full toss wide of off-stump, but Root can only collect a single as he plays across the line through mid-wicket. There is spin but it is coming slowly off the surface and the batsmen so far have time to play it off the pitch. A change of gloves for Root, brought out by forgotten paceman Steven Finn in a high-vis tabard. 

But, for some reason, Ashwin is replaced by Mishra, the short, stocky, bearded leg-spinner with thinning slicked back hair, who reminds me of my solicitor. His first ball is a long hop and a gleeful Root dismisses it to the mid-wicket fence.

Nice and steady from Root, comfortably collecting a single from the final ball of Jadeja's over with a push trough the vacant mid-off area and he will keep the bowling, which, given the way Moeen played the last over, is a good thing.

Moeen is playing like a man on about 260. That's just a languid, lazy push outside the off stump.

Will England have lost more wickets by that lunch break though? Half an hour to go and Moeen is looking far from secure, beaten in the flight again by the beguiling Ashwin. But he's still there.

Only a slip for Jadeja to Root, no short-leg, silly point or leg gully. Root keeps the bowling with a sweep for a single and he's still smiling. Good fun being Joe Root isn't it.

The local hero Ravichandran Ashwin comes into the attack to the delight of the crowd, with 27 wickets in the series and 247 to his name in total. Moeen plays a decidedly risky cut to the first ball and makes no contact but there are no further alarms. Yet. 

Glen Young: Must admit I've hummed the tune of "Instant Karma" whenever I see Ishant Sharma's name for ages now.

Hesitation in mid-pitch but Moeen gets through when they finally decide on a single. We can only imagine what Geoffrey would have said about a run-out at this point in the proceedings.
