On his innings: It was tough to start. It wasn't a pitch where you can be fluent and score easily but once you got used to it there wasn't many demons. Hopefully now we have settled nicely to carry it into the second day. 

On Moeen Ali: It was really impressive to see Moeen bat like that. The more experience and the added responsibility of batting four is something he thrives on. Hopefully this is just the start of his innings. 

On not reaching 100: It's very frustrating the amount of times I have got into a good position and can't kick on. I will sit down and have a think in the new year. Hopefully Santa will help me out and fill the stocking with some runs. The milestones don't mean anything if you don't win any games but if you're scoring big hundereds yooure giving the team a chance of winning. 

On his reaction after being given out by DRS: There was frustration there and hopefully I can start growing up a bit more. If I get punished then I'm sure it's deserved. 

On captaincy: It's not been a distraction, you don't go out of your way to read about it but I just want to play cricket and things will take care of themselves. Cooky has been a fantastic captain. Hopefully he does stay in the job, he's a great leader who can take us forward. 

Are we going to leave the last word to an Australian? No, we're not, but they are certainly in control of the first Test with Pakistan, that day-nighter in Brisbane. 

Pakistan are 97-8 after two days, 332 runs behind.

We need to find some batsmen so we can play Stokes at six, Jonny Bairstow at seven and Moeen Ali at eight. Moeen's a good cricketer, though he's not the greatest spinner. Well done to England, a good day which could have been worse.

Joe Root gave the innings some impetus, got the scoreboard moving and wasn't afraid to sweep, as Moeen Ali was batting quite scratchily at the other end at that stage. They took the game away from the Indians, it was a surprise when Root got out. Jonny Bairstow's been on great form this year, he hit the spinner out of the park. But he was caught at cover - that's why they make 400s, not 550s, and 400's not a big total in the subcontinent. They're in danger of not doing themselves justice, but well done Moeen, full marks for him for making 120.

Here's a look Moeen's wagon wheel, with those magnificent cover drives to the boundary in yellow. Not quite Gower, nothing is of course, but extremely aesthetic nevertheless.

It was a really nice day for England, both sides would have been wondering about how the pitch would be after that rain, and it played like a slow pudding. The youngster Jennings has to learn he doesn't have to go after a wide one when he's not scoring. He's going to get good bowlers who will bottle him up and not let him score anything.

Cook hasn't played at his best this series. He played two awful airy-fairy shots for him - that's not Alastair - and nicked one.

Matt Roberts: 100 for Moeen on a track that is getting easier to bat on, I dread to think how many Kohli will get.

Come on Matt, keep it upbeat...

England batsman Joe Root, who made a fluent 88: "Especially after the start we had, the way we fought back was excellent. It was a little bit more tacky and one of those wickets where you never really felt in and spin from the start with it being tacky. I thought the way Moeen and Jonny adapted was excellent.

(Of his failure to get to 100, in the last 10 times he's got to 75, he has got out before 90 on seven occasions) "It's been a theme throughout the year, something to ask Santa for and hopefully we can sort it out for next year. I don't want to think too much about it, I want to carry on playing naturally. I was adamant I didn't hit it but there was a spike on the replay and there is no point moaning about it. 

"Hopefully the pitch is a bit firmer tomorrow, if we can apply the way we played again we'll be looking at a good score."

England will be happy the way the day has panned out, as at 21-2 you thought "hang on a minute, last match of the tour, mind's not on the job" and England could have made a fool of themselves.

Root set the pattern, but Moeen Ali managed to get through that first 30-40 minutes when he looked all at sea, and away he went after lunch. He was in great form by the end, and relished the new ball.

Simon Goodall: I think the key to getting a ton if you're English, is to be dropped on 0. First Jennings now Ali.

Robbie Hoare: With all this talk of breaking Vaughany's record, worth pointing out England have played a lot more Tests this year. 

Both teams and both umpires are happy to call it a day as Stokes plays out a maiden to Ishant. There have been 102 runs for the loss of Jonny Bairstow in that 30-over final session. Will England be satisfied with their day after opting to bat? We'll find out soon, hopefully, in the end of day interviews.

Jadeja's taken three of the four wickets to fall. The figures suggest he's outbowled Ashwin. And you sense it's become a bit easier to bat as the day has gone on, as the pitch has dried out.

Ashwin is given only one over with the new nut as Jadeja comes back for his 28th of the day, looking for a fourth wicket. Moeen hustles through for two and then plays out the remainder of the over resolutely. One scheduled over left but we might squeeze two more in, although the experienced England pair are calling for new gloves to delay proceedings.

When Bird and Lyon added 49 for the last wicket in Brisbane today, people were asking me what was the highest partnership made by two people with animal surnames. So I offered 156 by Jeff and Martin Crowe.

The Australian cat is well and truly among the Pakistan pigeons - the tourists are 97-8.

Ishant conceded only five runs in his first seven overs but he has gone for 16 in less than two with the new ball, although Moeen's 12th four is a fortuitous inside edge close to his stumps that the sharp-featured seamer is less than impressed by. Floodlights on for the final couple of overs.

Aidan Watson: Has Moeen ever scored a match winning hundred? Seem to remember most of them were valiant draws or in a losing effort.
